Studio Dongle to Activation Code?

PostThu Sep 07, 2017 6:35 am

I'm curious if there is a way for us to get an Activation Code if we have the Dongle? I'd love to run Studio on my laptop sans Dongle while running Studio on the desktop platform with the Dongle. Although, I may also go without Dongle on the desktop as well to free up a USB port. So, is there an option somewhere for us to be able to get the activation code by providing proof we have the dongle?

When Resolve is final, not earlier.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

It's final. They just released 14. It's now out of Beta.

New orders will be supplied with the Activation License key so you could order a new Studio license and when you have it sell your dongle.

It's not easy to sell a used dongle. I have 3 dongles, one from dongle purchase, one from BMCC 2.5K, and one from URSA Mini 4.6K. Tried eBay once when the Dongle was still $995 and tried to sell at $500, and no one bit. Tried through B&H and Adorama, and they didn't want to acquire it to add to used section of their selling site.

I think the big key here is that with the Free version I'd simply like the Download option instead of filling in the form every time there's an update. That's what I love about the Studio version. Just download without having to Register every time. That's why I want the Studio version on my laptop. The laptop is for in the field or remote editing, so the Studio features I use are mainly used on the desktop.

Some clarification please.

Will new purchases only be supplied with the activation code (i.e. dongles are to be completely phased out), or will dongles still be available?

Dongle is valid for V14 but for the future?
What are the guidelines?

We don't plan to phase out support for supplied dongles. For new orders the Activation license key will be supplied by default although we expect resellers and the existing second hand dongle market will meet demand. As you can see in this thread there are a number of existing dongle owners who will buy a new activation and will be looking to sell their dongle.

Rohit,

I'm terrible confused over all this. I earlier ordered Resolve 14 Studio from a UK reseller, only to be told they will be sending me a dongle. What is the process for this, do I have to use the dongle only or will I be given a serial key when I activate R14?

If you have the dongle already that will be your license key. If you have not received it yet tell your reseller you would like the activation license key. Activation license keys will only ship starting from today's release but be sure to specify the activation license key during the transition if that's what you need.

Hi Peter, they are shipping a dongle, I've just spoke with them. Will this mean I HAVE to use the dongle all the time. It was purchased as Resolve 14 and not 12.5 as of today.

This is terrible news!!!!. Wasn't there mention somewhere in this forum that dongle owners would be allowed to switch to activation code?. Using one of my USB ports on my laptop for the dongle is a waste of resources in my opinion. Also, my dongle was once stolen from set and I had to get another one. Please allow dongle users to switch!!!. Maybe a physical shipping of the dongle to you for a code?. Is there anything in the dongle that makes it unique?. Anything that would allow BMD to deregister and a physical thing and not be usable anymore?. Please!!!!!

Case and point! No one is going to sell the Used Studio Dongle for the amount of money they have to spend on buying a new one in order to get the Activation Key. Please create a way for Existing Studio Dongle Users to provide proof they have the Studio Dongle and get an Activation Key.

Will this even work if we bought a Dongle pre-2013? I bought my dongle during 2011/2012 period. Can't remember exactly when, and got it through an employer. Then I got the BMCC 2.5K in 2013. I got my URSA Mini 4.6K in 2016. 3 Dongles. Can't sell any for the price of $299 in order to buy another which would have the Activation Key. See above quoted exchange I had on Private Messages to prove the point no one will buy After Market Dongle for same Price as New.

I support the option to convert dongled to license as an "option".
Remember that not everyone is the same. Some prefer dongles other license keys. Depends on your actual use case.
I would volontarily never swap my dongle for a license. Just the though of registering/deregistering/registering etc etc if i swap arround workstations, laptops etc. The horror.
Also at same price i would 100% buy the dongle , so also that case is mute.

Now i start at my main workstation. Then grab a coffee jump on the couch , swap my dongle to my laptop and continue. Then drive to a friend/client location , pop the dongle and presto.

But again it would be nice to have the option as we are "not" all created equal (trigger warning for SJW's  )

Being a Resolve 14 Studio with dongle now, I'm happy with that for almost the same reasons as Glenn just above, but I know that if I had to sell the dongle now, I couldn't for sure sell it at full price (regardless to the price itself) : no chance to sell a second hand stuff at a brand new one price.

This is a serious issue for me. Dongles are fine for people who use Resolve on a stationary workstation. Now that the software is no longer just considered a grading tool but is also firmly in the "editing" category, many people like my self are using it primarily on laptops. There have been a few occasions where I have forgotten my dongle and therefore had to uninstall Resolve Studio, install the free version just to be able to do some work, and then re-install Studio once I had access to the dongle. Big pain.
There really should be a solution where dongle owners can receive an activation code if they choose. I'd even be fine with this de-authorizing my dongle. At the very, very least, a Studio owner should be able to use the Resolve software at the same level of functionality as the free version even if they don't have the dongle connected.

Resolve 14 and Resolve 14 Studio can be installed fine simultaneously. I run the free version when I don't want a Dongle hanging off my laptop on the plane/in a coffee shop. Then run Studio with the dongle at home when an external monitor is connected anyway and need to apply noise reduction and reduce barrel distortion before a final render.

If you want you can instal 20 resolve versions next to eachother on the mac. No crappy registry to worrie about ;-)
Just after each install rename the Davinci Resolve directory by eg adding a version number or "free" or "studio"
I have 12.5.6 , next to 14.0 and several betas installed . Only thing you have to ignore is the message about wrong red decoder version. So your mileage of using Red material may vary depending on the differences between releases.
If its the same release , studio and free live happily ever after next to eachother

Thank you for pointing this out, as I took it for common knowledge that each instance of Resolve has to be renamed before installing another.

Agree. I was also under the impression that those who bought a dongle would receive a licence when 14 was out if beta. Feel slightly misled, as I made the purchase based on this assumption.

Blackmagic, you should also take a page out of adobe's book here and allow for installation on two machines (ie workstation/laptop) imo, or maybe a 'sister-licence' rebate.

Also, I think you would really benefit from direct sales of licence/downloads. I've allready 'almost' ordered Fusion Studio twice, but held back because I had to order a physical dongle (that's not in stock). U would allready have my money if it was available as a download.

Before I purchased Studio 12.5 I called Blackmagic and was assured that if I purchased 12.5 with the dongle, when Studio 14 was released the dongle would no longer be required. Based on what Blackmagic told me, I bought Studio 12.5 three months ago.

I have a valid serial number and proof of purchase from B&HPhotoVideo. I would expect Blackmagic to honor their word and provide me a registration code.

Still cannot even find a place to order Resolve 14. I wish that BM sold the activation code directly from their website so I could buy today and download a copy rather than wait until some reseller carries the official 14 version. BM would do good to simplify and be more direct and transparent about the licensing options for 14. I agree that having an activation code for two seats should be included so that those who work remotely on their laptops can load projects onto their desktop machines without hassle.

I am in the same boat Peter. I really hope they honour what we where told originally

...this is quite confusing, because blackmagic posted earlier, that the dongles can be changed to licence keys when Resolve 14 is released. Thats what my dealer told me,too..thats why I bought a dongle earlier.
I expect, that BMD will come up with a solution for that...?

I wrote to Tech Support referring to the early announcement on Forum that dongle owner may be able to swap with a serial number. Tech Support wrote me that Serial number will be supplied to only new customers of DR 14. So, I guess policy has changed and BM is not willing to do it.

Blackmagic did make it sound like all of us with dongles would be able to freely upgrade/trade-in for a serial Activation Code. To now say that only new Studio 14 purchases will be honored with a code is a let down.

From a programming standpoint I don't know if it's a possibility, but for the dongle to work without having to restart your machine would be a huge bonus.

This means I'll need a third copy of Resolve if I want to go dongle-less with a GTX 1080 Ti eGPU as the Mac App Store version doesn't support CUDA

I don't know what it's like with Windows, but under MacOS I don't need to restart the system if I forgot to plug the dongle.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

That's good news.

I have the latest 15" MacBook Pro and under Sierra and High Sierra Beta, Resolve 14 won't recognize the dongle unless booted with it plugged in.

I don't know if it might be the adapter. You need one with the new MBP, right?
I'm on a 2015 MBP, which still has the older USB ports.

Only thing you have to ignore is the message about wrong red decoder version.

I think this is very, very dangerous because of the problem of dealing with conflicting project databases. These are not compatible between versions, and there's even some Betas where it changed to a point. I have a separate boot partition so that I can boot into a separate OS and run 12.5 if I really had to. But don't run multiple versions of Resolve on the same computer.

True. It works for me as i use a remote central postgresql server and for each release that requires a different db version i create a new database on the server naming it after the specific release of resolve.
For disk databases i would stay away from this approach. Or in general if you are less techie. But it is definately very well possible. At some point during beta testing my controller mapping config to match BM's changes i had 7 versions of 14 running next to each other plus 12.5.6. Zero problems
Now just 12.5.6 and 14 final each with their own database.

I'd also like to trade in the dongle for a license key. I've never loved having my ability to use software tied to something that can be physically lost or broken and takes up a USB port. If you're just on a workstation maybe a non issue; grab a USB hub and leave it plugged in forever, but if you work on mobile the hub is cumbersome and the ports become much more valuable and the potential for loss goes way up.

Please BMD let me trade. Happy to mail you the dongle!

It's very strange. It was mentioned that we will have the opportunity to change to licence code. That's why I bought a dongle and not waited for the licence. If I knew I would have waited.
