They are very similar if not the same.
Yes, many files are 4:2:0 8bit, so they will benefit.

Andrew - Just found out there may be more to MainConcept than high quality H.264 encoding.

"The MainConcept AVC/H.264 Decoder offers real-time decoding speeds in various profiles and levels supported by the standard, incl. professional camcorder formats from Sony and Panasonic.
Recent additions to the H.264 standard add HDR capabilities, as well as extended resolution up to 8K."

"The MainConcept HEVC/H.265 Decoder allows 8K60p real-time playback up to 10-bit 4:4:4 on dedicated systems. To obtain high-speed performance on supported low-end systems, the decoder offers a DXVA option to utilize GPU power for accelerated HEVC/H.265 playback on Windows. For HDR (High Dynamic Range) support, the HEVC Decoder fills dedicated HDR-10, HLG and PQ-10 data structure provided by UCC."

GPU Decoder as well??

Andrew - What are your thoughts on the new AV1 royalty free codec ?

@AL You need to read the fine print like a hawk, and take a heavy dose of salt while you do it. The "Kaby Lake-U/Y" are all low power mobile cpus.

Take a look at this list, they are all mobile cpu's or ultra low end xeons.
https://ark.intel.com/search?q=iris

The best cpu you can buy right now with integrated graphics is the 7700k, and it only comes with "HD Graphics 630"
https://ark.intel.com/products/97129/In ... o-4_50-GHz

Here are the 630 specs
RAM - 0mb (uses system ram)
FREQ - 1000 to 1150 MHz
GFLOPS - 384 to 441.6

Now look at that in contrast to the cheapest nvidea 10 series you can buy, the gtx 1030 that costs roughly $70 USD.

RAM - 2GB
FREQ - 1227 to 1468 MHz
GFLOPS - 942 to 1127

Please note i would not recommend people buy anything less than a 1050 ti ($150ish) as you can get 1050's with supplemental power.
RAM - 4GB
FREQ - 1290 to 1392 MHz
GFLOPS - 1980 to 2138

Take note of the GFLOPS, as that is how to quantify GPU processing power.

Thanks Dan - I understand the U/Y series are for mobile. I was referring to the i7-8700K 6 core to be released next week. Intel claims a 40% improvement over the Kaby Lake i7-700K. :)

It's there, but no near to prime time. Needs time- if it will every be prime codec.
It meant to be even more efficient than H265.

That's because it has 50% more cores 6 vs 4. However it will only have the 630 graphics unit, so you won't see any boost in graphics performance over the 7700k.

Agreed - Agreed Resolve will also need a decent GPU card (or two) :)

Royalty free is a start - looks better than VP9 :)

Really interesting video

I'm about to build a pc with the 7900x and 1080ti but i'm a bit more confused now after seeing the 8k raw editing vid.
I wonder which has a greater impact on resolve, the 1950x or the vega frontier?

should i stick with
7900x/1080Ti as planned
or
Threadripper 1950x/1080 Ti
or
Threadripper 1950x/vega frontier
Resolve 19 Beta Studio

ASUS ProArt PA329CV 32" Monitor
intel i9 7900x 10 core
Nvidia 1080ti
win 10 pro

Money value wise, from everything I am reading and seeing, the Threadripper/Vega is the overall winner. At least it seems you get a bit more performance for quite a bit less in price.

For Red sources you probably better going all AMD.
If you have money wait for more cores i9s from intel.

We were talking about Thunderbolt 3 and AMD. Just got wind of this. Happy I was wrong and it didn't take a generation of chipsets to implement.

An AMD X399 Threadripper motherboard supporting a Thunderbolt 3 add in card.

Oooh.. that is the board to get now. That it has TB3 and all those other goodies.. looks promising!

I am torn on video cards too. That Vega Frontier Edition looks darn good.

Question, for Resolve.. (I am sure I have asked or read this before..but cant find where it was)... GPUs in SLI has no effect on resolve in any way.. is that right? So if I set up an SLI setup for gaming purposes.. but add a 3rd GPU... is that feasible... and how would I set that up? I would want 3 NVMe drives as well. It looks like this board and most support x16 SLI and then x8 for the other slots. Isnt x8 1/2 the performance? So if I were to get 3 GPUs the same.. one would run half the speed as the other 2 since it would be stuck in an x8 slot?

Hi.

Peter Chamberlain wrote in the link: 'Regardless, don't setup to use SLI. Resolve can use both GPUs.'

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=63759&p=360607&hilit=disable+sli#p360607

And David Williams wrote in the following post: 'You can install the SLI bridge, and in the Nvidia Control Panel you can enable/disable SLI as needed.'

And when I read the anandtech link:

https://www.anandtech.com/show/11847/gi ... signare-ex

The Designare EX Motherboard has 'an x16/x8/x16/x8 arrangement.'
and if you read the Comments you will find out that the Tunderboldt 3 is not implemented yet.

Regards Carsten.
