Problems in MXF format OP1A and MPEG2 XDCAM codec in Davinc

PostFri Sep 22, 2017 3:22 pm

Hello everyone, I need to export a file to TV broadcast in MXF format with 8 channels. I've done the whole process on the timeline with the channel completion. Normally, export the file to a folder. But, the problem is that the .mxf file gives an error when copying manually to the Clip folder. I use a Sony PDW1 device. Other files generated by other programs such as FCPX and Premiere do not give this error. Will it be a problem in the Davinci codec? I need help.

Can you render the MX1 format OP1A to a fixed drive in your computer?
If so, are you able to copy it to the Sony external disk?

Hi Peter,
already tried, but does not work.

The following error message appears:
error -36 (MAC) can't write to disk

(this is translated from german...)

(I changed MX1 to MXF in the subject line)

This is why you need proper support to export files to Sony devices.
It's not simple copy. As far as I'm aware files need to have proper structure, divided into <4GB parts with xls metadata control file.

the files on the sony disks can be greater than 4 GB without a problem.
(written from avid or fcp 7 directly on disk)

OK, so the real issues is nothing to do with Resolve rendering of MXFOP1A and MPEG 2 XDCAM. It's really that it is not rendering directly too or in a format recognised by the Sony PDW1 device.

I dont have one of these, nor the specs for their format. Do you have details on what it needs?

Do they have xml control file?
You have to use 3rd party (Sony app) to transfer data. Resolve won't do it.

It is quite simple.

Maybe you have an FCP7 running, then you can render a testfile to any folder on your mac.
(or directly to the Sony Drive)

You don't need any additional software. (Maybe a driver for the Sony Drive)

This testfile can be written to a Sony U1 or U2 Drive without problems.
(in the "Clip" Folder on the disk)

This is a normal workflow here in germany for any broadcast station.
(Seems to be the same in Brazil ;-))

Same with AVID MediaComposer

The DaVinci MXF File has the right Codec but is NOT writable to the XDCam Disk
NOR is it recognised by Sony's XDCam Transfer software (which is for free)
so there is missing ??something??

If you like, I can create a file and send it via "wetransfer"

Yes, files have to be very specific for Sony devices and this is the problem.
Not every XDCAM HD file is going to work as you already found out.

I can copy a DaVinci exported XDCAM file to the Clip folder successfully, using Sony PDW-U1.
Usually we use 1080i50 (didn't tried 29.97p project) but it works.

Unfortunally export directly to Clip folder is not allowed (write permission error) but it works to me if I render to my harddrive and then copy the result to the disc.

Are audio export settings correct?
Audio must be set to Liner PCM, 24 bit and you need to select "Render one track per channel".

From Davinci Resolve supported editing codec, we can see that Davinci Resolve has native decoding support for MXF OP-Atom files coming from different sources, but not MXF OP-1A files.

I've exported this file with DaVinci Resolve 14.0.1:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/dh69pp1ll3bpq ... p.zip?dl=0

I can copy it on my XDCAM drive successfully (XDCAM Drive Utility v5.0.6).
It works (Import and Link) with Avid Media Composer (tested with v8.9.2).
