Ursa Mini Pro has DELAY on LCD and viewfinder?

PostWed Oct 04, 2017 9:06 pm

Hello, I just tried the Ursa Mini Pro at a local reseller. It looks amazing but I had a problem. Both built-in LCD and an external SDI viewfinder (Zacuto) had EXTREME delay showing images. So if a man walked in front of the camera, I would see him 0.5 seconds later. They told me this is common to all Blackmagic cameras.

So:

1) is this true? Do you experience any delay? Please could you record a short clip with your smartphone moving your hand in front of the lens and recording both LCD and the hand?

2) I read about 1-2-3 frame delay on SDI output on this forum but it look a lot more delay in my case. Is the 1-2-3 frame delay also in the built-in LCD?

3) Did any firmware change anything?

Thank you

A half second delay is not normal. What other equipment was the camera feed running through?
If the camera is being fed through a switcher or other devices this may be adding multiple stages of delay to what you are seeing.

On Camera 4.4 software the expected delay on the SDI out on the Mini and Mini Pro is around 2 frames and the LCD is around 3. As I have mentioned on another thread, this is something we are looking at improving in firmware... we are confident we can improve on it substantially in a software update.

Keep your eyes peeled because this could be closer than you think.

Nice!!! I was shooting a music video recently and I stopped the shot twice because I thought the artist was out of sync while looking at the performance through the monitor. It’s great to have an update coming to fix this. Also I hope a fix is coming soon for the camera app, for some reason I can’t change the frame rate past 60fps when in 2k mode using the app to control the ump. When I change it on the camera I can see the frame rates go up to 120fps in the app. It just won’t move pass 60fps when using the app to control the camera

Camera has only LCD and SDI out to Zacuto viewfinder. Internal SD recording 4.6K (the problem was also without recording).

2 or 3 frame should not be visible, right? My delay was so high that it could be impossible to focus

See this video (on Ursa Mini, not the Pro but it should be the same?):

Is this delay normal?

Camera 4.5 update was released today and it has a substantial improvement in it for latency in the Mini Pro.

Our engineers have been working hard on this and we are now down to under 1 frame of latency. It's on the website in the support pages as a free download that you can flash your Mini Pro with now.

Tim, that's great news - but why is there just nothing in the update for the Mini 4.6k? Has the Mini 4.6k already been abandoned by your engineers?

EDIT:
Just read in another thread your post that they are still looking into it for the Non-pro Mini if it is possible.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I hope BMD doesn’t lose sight of the URSA Mini 4.6K EF and PL/B4 cameras. It’s a beautifully designed camera, that isn’t perfect for everyone (like the original URSA 4K), that is a joy to use when you learn how to make the most of its strengths and weaknesses. Minimizing latency is something that really doesn’t have a workaround and if BMD can work its magic one more time, the Mini 4.6K shooters will be very grateful.

Blackmagic Camera Setup 4.5
New features for Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K

No 4: Lowers LCD monitoring latency.

I do not know how much the latency has been lowered but something were done. Looking forward to check.
