Help Choosing a Wide Angle Lens

PostSat Nov 11, 2017 3:27 pm

Hi There. I got close to NO experience with wide angle lenses, so i think I would ask here. Tomorrow im going to this place called ZONGO between the andes and the jungle in Bolivia and I have to rent a wide angle lens for my Ursa Mini Pro.

The 2 lenses I could rent are 18-35mm or 11-16, but I can only choose ONE.

So question: If you pause this video here:

at 3:08... you can see a little house in the left corner. That's where we will be shooting. If you want to see the walls in the background, just from looking at the picture... would you go with 18-35 or 11-16 ?
Do you think 18 would be enough, because I only own lenses from 35mm up and I can only rent one lens.
This place is pretty far away from civilization, so I can't go back to get another lens once I'm there.
Any opinion would be gr8, THANX

The shoot is not about landscape, but the landscape is part of the story.
Would you dare to go there with a 35mm as your lowest focal length knowing that you might waste some landscape-shot-oportunitues?

3:06 is going to be the background in most shots, but from next to that house.

Martin, you know what your 35mm will do, so imagine using roughly twice the field of view for an 18mm lens or three times with an 11mm lens. In my opinion, going all the way to 11mm may be visually extreme whereas somewhere in the 16mm range may give a reasonably ‘normal’ feeling and will avoid vignetting due to the matte box so your filters will still be useful. But the 18-35mm range is all useful and that might be a better utilitarian solution. My aesthetic of course, but 11mm isn’t going to be pleasing with any pan/tilt camera motion.

Thanx! That was actually very helpful!!!

Jason: Its about 2 hippies / outcasts living there, but it then turns into one my weird fitness tutorials.

Rick: I wish I could get a 16-35 then. but actually as you said "the 18-35mm range is all useful" since i don't even own a 24, maybe thats what i should use and then work with 18.

Denny: YES, 90degrees should be more than enough. Will get that app. i passed this place twice but didnt even bring a phone.

THANX Will get the 18-35 then :)

This is what we shot there. Another exercises video... That sigma lens worked perfectly. It would not have worked with just 35. 20mm was kinda ok.

BUT again :( we completely messed up 4 shots and 2:00 is totally ruined and out of focus. No idea how this happened - still had to use the shot though because we had nothing else to use. Would have got there again, but to far and no time.

There is nothing special between 2:15 and 7:45 in case anybody is watching it (just a stretching routine)...

This time i noticed the difference between process 422 and losses raw. I think I ll avoid 422 in the future.

And of course we had to make fun of RED and the current situation on youtube with Susan Wojcickis kids friendly content policy.

and this is what it looked like out of camera:
