UMP SSD POWERING PROBLEM

PostTue Nov 14, 2017 7:58 pm

The new UMP SSD is fitted and doing well.

However, today I fitted the UMP it to the Ronin and used the P tap on the Ronin to power the UMP via the XLR input.

I notice that, although the camera is powered, the SSD is not receiving power - the LED doesn't light to indicate power.

Do you think the SSD requires more than the Ronin battery can offer?

No, the SSD module is physically mounted between the battery and the battery plate in the camera, and passes the power through from the battery to the camera while getting its power from the battery en route. The 4-pin XLR is connected to the camera’s DC to DC power board at a different point than the battery plate connection, to isolate them from each other. So the 4-pin XLR power input is not going to power up the SSD module, as there is no connection between the camera power board and the SSD, except for passing the battery connection along.

Think one-lane, one-way road — battery to SSD module and to the camera only. So the ca,era power switch is not going to turn off power to the SSD and the 4-pin XLR is not going to power the SSD module as their is no connection from the camera to the SSD.

I had my ssd recorder up and running before my batteries arrived by using the supplied wall power connection. I did not record anything but formated my ssd successfully. Maybe the ronin power disto does not provide enough amps.

Denny, thanks for the reply.

Maybe yours is behaving differently from mine - but my SSD powers up and records when supplied by the xlr and connected to the wall.

So, with no V lock battery involved, my scenario is:

* When powered by mains voltage from the wall socket via the xlr input - SSD shows power light and records when asked.

* When powered by the P Tap on a DJI Ronin (first edition), camera powers up and records to cfast or SD car but the SSD module shows now power light and will not record when asked.

So the cable from the Ronin is obviously delivering power to the camera but it's not reaching the SSD.

Anyone else tried this?

Ah, I was wrong in my assumption, good to know it works with the xlr 4-pin power connection, it would make sense that it would. My previous comment was based on using in line accessories like wireless mike receiver on ENG cameras.
