We need advice regarding Threadripper

We use a RED Weapon 6K camera. We wish to upgrade from a 2010 Mac Pro for post production. We first focused on a Z840 to process ProRes 4444 at 4k resolution.

Then we decided we want to directly process the RED Raw files. This led us to configure a Supermicro 7048GR-TR. Using gear we already have (Cubix Xpander, 4K grading monitor, 128GB of rack storage, etc.), the cost for new gear (barebone server/motherboard, dual 18-core E5-2697 v4 processors, 64GB memory, four GTX 1080Ti cards, etc.) would be $12,365 at thinkmate.com.

We then priced a Threadripper system at ibuypower.com. Using Aorus X399 Gaming 7 motherboard, Threadripper 1950x processor, 64GB memory, three 1080Ti cards, etc., the cost would be $6,465.

Pretty amazing price difference.

The Threadripper system would initially have one less GPU than the Supermicro system due to fewer PCIe slots (two x16, two x8, one x4). But we could add a fourth 1080Ti by removing a UAD audio plugin card (not essential).

This video

discusses a Threadripper system capable of processing 4K raw files with only two 1080Ti cards, including the graphics card. So, it appears our system should have plenty of horsepower for the RED Raw 6K files.

Question
Any reason to hold back and wait on this purchase? We recognize there aren’t many DaVinci Resolve Threadripper users yet. We also recognize that BMD has not officially blessed Threadripper, although they have said the revised Config Guide will include it. At this price, we would like to proceed now. Too risky?

I've seen on different forum that user runs Threadripper 1950x at 4GHz with temp around only 50C at full load thanks to new cooler which covers whole big CPU surface. He uses Enermax LiqTech TR4.
This is such a low temp for 16 cores running at 4GHz.
This should be enough to run 6K RED maybe even at 50p/60p. You don't really need 3 Titans, problem here is mainly decoding RED 6K files, which is CPU task not GPU.

You would not worry about going ahead and purchasing now, even though proven DaVinci Resolve use is way behind gamer use?

There are people using AMD processors with Resolve, so try to reach them. If anything I would be more worry about whole ecosystem- so motherboards, drivers etc. CPU itself has to work.
I think Threadripper is amazing value for money. Fact that it can be "easily" overclocked seams to be also very good news. Size of heat spreader is huge for Threadripper, so properly designed coolers can easier collect all this heat.
I think it already proved that Intel needs to do bit more as they were very lazy.
Just search web about Threadripper performance in different apps and try to make your own opinion.
