Reload an image sequence

PostSat Jul 01, 2017 6:31 pm

Hi!

I have a Resolve 12.5 timeline crowded of image sequences I rendered with Fusion.

Now refining the edit to sync with music, I need some of the sequences to be a bit longer (or shorter).

I've rendered again those sequences with new durations, but now I can't find a way to make Resolve accept the new duration and let me extend their trimming in the timeline.

For instance, a sequence that was 125 frames long now is 155, but Resolve keeps reading the 125, even after relinking.

So it seems I need to import the sequence again, manually change and resync in the timeline, then delete the old reference in the Media page. Oh no...

Anyone knows a faster workaround? I suspect I'm missing something.

I've found the trick.

- Delete the clip in the media without deleting in the timeline. Of course in the timeline it gets red "off-line".
- Re-import the sequence (with new duration). Resolve reassigns the new media clip to the instance in the timeline, that now has a red icon with an exclamation.

Sorry for my newbye questions. Sometimes come to the forum after a first unsuccessful round, and then find a solution later.

Perfect for me if a moderator deletes this dumb thread.

Nice weekend for everyone.

You could also import the new sequence in your footage bin as a completely different clip, make sure the new clip is actively selected in your bin, then in your timeline right click on the clip that you want to replace, and choose Replace with selected clip. You shouldn't need to re-sync anything, but you should be able to peel back your handles as you need.

But I would suggest that as a new feature for 14. I think adobe products can do it and it's pretty handy.

I vote for a "reload image from disk" or some such.

Yes! I'm always updating comped shots from rendered from nuke. Constantly having to quit and reopen resolve just to refresh shots. A simple "Right Click > Reload" on the media, edit and timeline would be welcome!

Ah damn, I just got v16 Studio and this still seems to be a problem. Best I have found is right clicking clip in Media bin and selecting "Replace selected clips" but this is incredibly cumbersome and disappointing for software that touts how fast it is to do things (which in other cases it is).

Premiere happily updates clips automatically including adding/removing images. I just got caught out thinking that Resolve would do the same but didn't and had production issues.

Any info if the simple reload photage would be possible in the near future?

I am seriously thinking of going back to Adobe premiere and After effects..it´s a such a basic thing that must be there for a good workflow..just can´t stand constantly browsing and reloading clip, right click and reload ala adobe way thanks.

It's perplexing that they've added an entirely new editing workflow, along with highly-requested tools like the (cough-cough) Boring Detector, but a Reload/Refresh Footage command still eludes us.

Here's hoping for Resolve 17...

I work with 3D sequences pipeline. So media get reloaded a lot. When the length and names are the same it's ok. But when they are not.... what multiplies the headache is that Fusion does not update mediaIn nodes even using that "delete-reimport" trick above, because new media has a different ID. So you could just go and import each 3D sequence and relink one by one. Big compositions with multipasses will definitely take some time, so should be another way and it is! You can take out MediaID from new footage by importing it, then go and learn some scripting to change that in all of the MediaIn nodes at once. I guess it still not possible to change the same parameter in multiple nodes, please let me know if I'm wrong.

And we are done! All that because one render got 2extra seconds in a new revision. Now you got to repeat it for 4 other presenters in the same scene...and multiply it to a dozen other scenes.

A little bit exaggerated, but yes.
1) Simple "reload footage" would be much appreciated. Assuming it would detect new frames.
2) Also alt-drag on some footage in media tab like in adobe could help to replace a sequence with different names like "Render_v1" with "Render_v2" without re-cutting and relinking.
3) Would love to see easier way to change the same parameters in multiple nodes.

I switched to DR after many years with Adobe and I have huge respect for how you move forward.
Thank you for all the hard work on.

Automatic reload is a must have for 3D production workflow. That said changed images are instantly shown correctly (if cache is cleared, still Metadata wont update). Resovle only wont show images outside of the initially rendered sequence.

It may seem exaggerated, but it's not. I am in this same boat and offering revision after revision is something I have to do. This would help a ton. Just adding my +1 on this.

Just wanted to post an update to my earlier snarky post on this. I'm liking Blackmagic's design philosophy here, where they don't want you to care about manually refreshing source footage, and do that automatically for you.

It does seem to work pretty much all the time. In the rare instance that it doesn't, what I've found to work is right-clicking the clip in the Media Pool > Reveal in Media Storage - that seems to force a refresh.

For Fusion, automatically updating also usually works, but again, in the rare instance it doesn't, I toggle this off and on: right-clicking a clip > Modes > Update (or just hitting Ctrl+U twice).

still in 2021 this is an issue? Really? I do like all those new features in DR (not that I would need them). But how about fixing bug that are real show-stoppers in everyday production? I would even happily pay twice the money for DR...

Replace clip does not work on clips where change speed was previously applied.

the willing to address this feature is shown on the fact that you STILL have to select a bunch of files for it to create a sequence. That's only convinient if you work with a single pass and up to 30 frames on total.

I guess we need to downgrade expectations moving from adobe, at least, on this specific issue. We will all be replaced by AI sooner or later so let's see Blackmagic puts a hand on it before they start losing consumers lol
