Ultrastudio Mini + PremierePro

PostThu Nov 30, 2017 9:22 pm

What is the proper BMD recommended setup for Ultrstudio Mini + Premiere Pro?

The only way I can get Premiere to play back is if I
1. Enable Black Magic Audio as Default audio in Premiere Audio Prefs
2. Enable Black Magic Playback for Picture, but select Adobe Desktop Audio for Audio device...

The moment I select Black Magic as audio device the system refuses to play.

Any suggestions ? Why does BM audio not work?

You will also need to set the Premiere Audio Hardware settings to Blackmagic.

Yes. Audio Hardware set to BM. That's what I'm referring to in point1.
The big question is what is supposed to be happening for #2.
When selecting what seems to be the right thing: BM for audio playback, the system cannon play back. Switching back to Adobe Desktop audio works... ?

Blackmagic Audio option in Premiere is for BMD interface devices that have seperate audio out. The Mini Monitor only has embedded audio. Selecting Blackmagic Audio routes the audio to the non existant audio out, therefore disabling monitoring on the computer. This happens because the BMD device driver is common to all BMD IO devices.

I think Francois means that when you set BM for audio and hit play nothing happens. Timeline won't play (not that audio is not there).
I've seen this if I remember well way back in time. Looks like a bug.
I'm not actually sure if latest drivers are actually CC 2018 compatible.

Yeah, you are correct. If you select BM for audio with a Mini Monitor, PREMIERE will feed audio ONLY to the Mini Monitor, therefore disabling the computer system audio. Because the Mini Monitor does not have an audio circuit, Premiere will not play. I have the exact setup Francois has. It is not a bug. If you want BM audio from a Mini Monitor, you must use the embedded audio and also NOT use the Premiere BM audio selection.

If you use a BMD device which has audio circuits, then it works as expected. It is a Mini Monitor hardware limitation that upsets Premiere, not a bug.

Makes sense. I was about to say that it's working on Mac, but I remembered that I had to use work around.
I choose BM device in Mac settings and then did not use BM setting in Premiere (+redirected all other sounds to Mac speakers).

Thanks, guys.
I can finally put this to rest now.

Note: It is possible to get Audio out of the Ultrastudio Mini with Premiere. But sluggish.
(HDMI out. Not sure about SDI)
By selecting:
AUDIO HARDWARE>Default Output>Blackmagic Audio
PLAYBACK> Audio Device>Adobe Desktop Audio
PLAYBACK>Video Device>Blackmagic Playback

Audio now streams through the HDMI with picture. Can you confirm the same?
However, the system is sluggish to play back. When you hit play there is a lag before audio streams out. So not of any use for editing. Also has a wait for "processing time" when you switch from Sequence playback to Source playback. So this might be good for a QC playback session with client in studio if you're sending it to another monitor (and want to send a locked AV stream to the same monitor). But too sluggish for editing.

So by the looks of things, with limitations of the Ultrastudio Mini & Premiere: To get work done, Adobe Desktop Audio it is.

Yes, that is the correct setup. I have no lag or delay with playback using embedded audio from the Mini Monitor. You didn't post your system specs so it may be your particular setup causing a delay. I know Premiere will lag if the computer is caching, drawing audio waveforms or refreshing assets. Overall I prefer other editing apps but I'm required to use Premiere for most of my work, so I put up with Premiere's quirks!

It's still not ideal setup as you split audio and video chain, which is not desired at all for proper monitoring.

I only use the embedded audio from the Mini Monitor. If I must use the system audio for any reason, then I know there is a slight audio/video sync issue with the external monitor. However, it IS important to be able to monitor both audio & video from the Mini Monitor to be certain there are no sync issues.
