URSA Mini *FEATURE REQUEST* : QHD Resolution...

PostThu Dec 28, 2017 8:57 am

Could we see a QHD resolution (1440p) in future updates for the 4.6k?

Good suggestion! I have thought about the need for somthing between UHD and 1080p. For stuff that is to be delivered in 1080p but where you want to do some minor reframing and stabilization, shooting in 1080p is not enough but UHD is unnecessary. I was thinking about something like 3K shooting, but QHD would work also. Let's hope BM listens..

I think it’s a great idea and would love to see it, however a few months back Tim did say: “Regarding extra resolutions - we already support a massive amount of resolutions and formats on these cameras and are unlikely to add more resolution options.”

Obviously I can’t speak for another and I have no idea what they are developing but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

But +1 if it would ever be considered

Correct me if I'm wrong....but I would imagine a QHD resolution would probably be utilized more than the 3k Anamorphic resolution currently on the camera...

Thoughts?

In January 2017 I had written to BMD support a suggestion to add another resolution for ProRes recording:
2880x1620 16:9 (non-windowed)

A resolution of 2880x1620 would give plenty of room (150%) in post but uses only 56% of the space of UHD. That means for example you would get 74min per 256GB card with 25p ProRes HQ.

I still think that would be a great addition.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I don't think you'll get it just buy asking. But Robert Niessner is right. 2880x1620 is the perfect resolution at 150% the resolution of HD which is the perfect resolution for proper downsampling and stabilization work.

Also I know they probably won't do this but 2880x1620 at 120fps, or possibly even 4K 120fps I believe is something that these cameras can do and I'm hoping they add that feature even if it's only for short bursts. It would significantly improve the slow motion quality as you're not dealing with a 1:1 window of the sensor for HD output and increase the quality greatly.
