Sorry for me being a little absent from the forum, but we've been incredibly busy here, a lot of it due to the Cinema Camera! I figured I'd share some info and get people up to speed on what we've been up to with the camera.
First, I have to say that by all accounts, the Cinema Camera has been treating us extremely well here at OneRiver Media. In a way, it’s kind of sad that our other cameras have been collecting dust on the shelves. But this camera is THAT GOOD. Even at 10-bit ProRes HQ the images we get out of the BMCC are amazing.
I’ve had the camera for quite some time now; since mid-2012. We’ve used it on short film production, commercial production, PSA production, corporate production, visual effects plate production, chromakey production, live event production (first ever 100-meter fiber thunderbolt transmission in the world), documentary production, stock footage production, and last but not least, personal enjoyment production! I still get a good chuckle when I see people say this camera can’t be used for this or that. Yes, it definitely has some quarks that’ll hopefully be hammered out in firmware updates, but even despite that, I’ve made the camera work, successfully I might add, for me. Like any other camera, it’s simply a tool, and you learn how to use the tool and take advantage of its strengths and work around its weaknesses. But for me, its strengths (the biggest being its image capture quality) far outweigh any hurdles.
So what have we done? Here are some updates…
NEXUS, The Critical Phase
As some of you know, we're in early production for our short film, "NEXUS, The Critical Phase". It's been going very well and we have more production planned in the next weeks to come. The entire film will be shot only with the Cinema Camera and only in 2.5K RAW. We have a website on the details here including BTS: http://www.nexus-film.com. Below are some pre-grades of some of the shots.
BMW Documentary
I can't go into too many details just yet, but we started production on this back in December and have had various production days since. The vast majority of footage will be acquired using the Cinema Camera as well (probably a good 90% of it). The majority of this will actually be shot in ProRes HQ, with some beauty footage shot in RAW. Below are some pre-grades of some sample shots.
Workshops
I've also been busy touring around speaking at different venues relating to the Cinema Camera, including Hollywood Post Alliance, Digital Cinema Society, Boston Creative Pro User Group, Los Angeles Creative Pro User Group, San Francisco CPUG Supermeet, and more. I have a schedule of events lined up if anyone is interested in attending.
Atlanta Cutters Presentation
March 27, 2013 I'm giving a 90-minute presentation on the Cinema Camera at the Atlanta Cutters group at Turner Studios. Rob Ashe, editor on the Conan O'Brien Show will also be presenting. Full details here.
Atlanta 2-day Workshop
March 29-30, 2013 I'm partnering with Biscardi Media (outside of Atlanta) where I'm presenting a 2-day workshop on the Cinema Camera. Day 1 is geared for shooters, and day 2 is geared for those in post. I'll be covering a lot of ground at this one, and I'll be showing sample footage from NEXUS, the BMW documentary, and other various productions and such. One person is flying all the way from DUBAI for this event! This is going to be an info-packed event. Plus some incredible give-aways as well, including DaVinci Resolve, a Flanders Scientific LM-2140W monitor, a $200 FSI gift certificate for all attendees and more! Full details here.
NAB Presentation
April 6, 2013 I'm giving a 90-minute presentation on the Cinema Camera at NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) during their Post/Production World event for the DP slot. Full details here.
We're also planning another round of workshops in Boston, L.A., San Francisco, possibly New York, and looking into Europe as well. If you want the latest details as these events unfold, you can subscribe to my Cinema Camera newsletter at onerivermedia.com/bmcc, as well as on Facebook, and Twitter.
Okay, hopefully that brings everyone up to speed. I hope to see you at some of these events with a sneak peek into what we’ve been doing with the camera. Cheers!
