I'm hoping that with the requests and showed interest that has occurred recently that DNxHD and DNxHR will come to the camera by IBC 2017. That's about a month away. My fingers are crossed. Chances are that's also when we'll get the full release of Resolve 14, the SSD Recorder for the URSA Mini, and the Nikon Mount. Those are my guesses, and no hard evidence to back any of it up.

+1 and I own three URSA Minis.
What's baffling here is the Blackmagic Video Assist 4K supports all flavors of DNxHD and DNxHR. How the heck is this not also in your cameras, Blackmagic?

You can process ProRes on PCs without QT, using DR 14 or even Premiere Pro (but it's more mature in DR).

No one should have to ask for what was already promised. We still have an version of the firmware that has DNx grayed out. Which means it was planned. If the video assist can do it, the cameras should, as well.

Why? You can read ProRes on the PC, just not write it.

You can read it, but at least the QuickTime version is highly inefficient. It takes 60-70% of my i7-980's 6+6 cores just to play ProRes UHD 25p. While Cineform or DNxHD only take ~15%.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

My hope right now is that this week we get a firmware update that includes it. They announced the Nikon mount as shipping at IBC 2017, so fingers are crossed that any firmware updates they release for that support include DNx. They also have the SSD Recorder for the UMP shipping in about 4 weeks from what was said at IBC, so hopefully the firmware update that includes support for that also has DNx if it's not in the one for Nikon lens support. Either way, I hope it's in a firmware update soon.

Why the hell are we begging for a feature that was already promised to us? Why is Blackmagic like this? This is the ONE thing that has kept me from having faith in you guys, between this and the og ursa being "upgradable"... there's always something that you all don't fufill on.

And then again they do deliver things that weren’t promised. For example, Bluetooth in the Pro. I’m not implying that you’re wrong Jeffrey, but there’s more to BMD than a company that doesn’t deliver everything promised.

Now that Cineform codec is open sourced and cross platform, wondering if this high quality codec would be a viable alternative with no licensing issue.

As we're in the New Year, I'd like to inquire to see if there has been enough demand for DNx codecs to be added to the camera? Hopefully in Firmware 5.0?

Wonder if we could have a forum poll with most requested features that allows voting? I'd bet that DNxHD/R would be very high on the list. BM could also poll how many owners are on PC vs Mac. Obviously, every single PC user would support DNx, since ProRes is useless on PC.

At least we can celebrate shutter speed/angle in the near year... ;)

While I'd love to see DNxHD/DNxHR in the Ursa cameras, how do you mean ProRes is useless on the PC? All the usual NLE:s can read ProRes.

Dear Blackmagicians, a happy new year!

If you find the time to implement DNX, a lot of my clients would be very happy about it as they edit on Avid.

I have a bit bad conscience for this request, because you already gave a lot for the little money I spent on your camera and EVF, that makes me smile all the time I use it.

Good times,
Christian

DNxHD 175x / 220x (for 23.98 and 29.97 respectively) are the 2 main 1080p HD master delivery codecs for the majority of shows at the post facility I work at. Would love to see at least those flavors implemented into the camera. Seeing a familiar option like that would give AE's and Post Sup's less pause when the field teams request to use these cameras.

Hi Tim,
Thanks so much for your reply. Personally, I'd most often use:

1. DNx 444 in 4.6K, UHD, HD (for max quality)
2. DNx HQX in 4.6K, UHD, HD (for high quality, but smaller files)
3. DNx LB in UHD, HD (super small file size, "disposable" content)

HQ (8-bit) seems not worth its size compared to HQX (10/12-bit), and SQ seems like a waste of file size compared to LB. Frame rates: 23.98, 60, and 120.

Resolutions that are most important for me are 3840x2160 and 1920x1080. I'd be happy with full sensor 4.6K, but since the UHD & HD resolutions were promised those are the ones I'd be happy to get. In addition 2K DCI & 4K DCI resolutions would be additionally fantastic.

As for the codec flavors (flavours, to include the British/Australian spelling) I'd want DNx 444, DNx HQX, DNx HQ, DNx SQ, DNx LB. In other words, all the flavors. It's good to have options.

Tim, I love that you asked. My fingers are crossed. I know a few clients that will be happy for me to be able to hand over DNx codecs over ProRes.

Tim, thanks for your question.

For aquisition DNXHR 444 12bit UHD, HD and 2K for keying in other programmes than Resolve would be great, for most TV work DNXHR HQ HD would be amazing. Additionally I'm often asked for 50i (I don't like it but that's what they often want).

You know what would be cool?
If you could record a film log 50/59.98p UHD DNxHD on one card and a 50/59.98 interlaced HD DNxHD with baked-in extended video LUT onto the other.

So you'd have one for the archive and later grading and one for immediately delivery and onto-timeline slapping for the broadcast client.

Yeah, that was to be expected. Based on the time certain features that are added to one camera and come to the others we can expect about a month to pass before the other cameras get the DNx codecs.

You can always read ProRes on a PC, just not generate it without additional software.
So, what's the problem? I don't think that BM cameras are very attractive to those who only make straight cuts and don't need any grading. After grading, your footage is rendered anyway and you can choose codecs to your hearts delight.
Maybe AI can help you. Or make you obsolete.

Uli, for me the problem is the bad performance of ProRes 4k QuickTime on a Win PC. DNxHR in MXF would be much lighter.

Once again this is not about what codec I can use, its about what the client wants it delivered in.
I have two major broadcast clients who want DNxHD. It doesn't matter what other options are available that is what they want. They don't care how I get that to them, its my problem...
I bought the UM thinking it had DNxHD. Then I thought it was just a matter of time before it was ungrayed. Now I'm really hoping we get what should have been available on our cameras over a year ago. and that will be one less barrier to getting them to accept my camera.

Happy to see that mxf will be coming in a future update. Hoping its OP-Atom mxf like the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle is capable of. That would make it a truly edit-ready camera for Avid based workflows, and one of the only camera systems on the market that could make that claim.

Fingers crossed they'll update the other Ursa Minis with these features sooner than later. This is the last barrier for me before deciding if I will purchase an Ursa Mini Pro for myself as well as recommend them to upcoming shows at the production company I work for.

DNxHD DEMAND

PostTue Mar 06, 2018 9:00 pm

To be honest? I hope more cineform, and cfraw addition than dnxhd/hr.
I pay to have again on a camera like in past with si2k, kineinfinity and more... for who not know what about talk, I talk about a 12bit log codec with active metadata with raw developing, scalability and more.
Please ask us to pay to upgrade firmware to have it. If work on 2009 cameras we can have enough computing power on actual ursa mini 4.6k and pro. Cineform is open-source, for developer 20$ per camera is the only fee for raw addition, if BMD ask me, I’m the one and the first to support, like Panasonic ask me 100$ to add log on gh series, I would be happy to pay to add cineform to my camera.
I used it on pentium 4 computer, and raw on a i3 cpu recently.

I'd opt for Cineform. What if Avid takes the path of Apple one day? What about our archives?

It doesn't matter how many people want DNxHD. This isn't a request for a new feature - it's something which Blackmagic advertised as a forthcoming feature when I bought the camera. It's even there in the menu, but disabled.

Please let's not ask why anyone would want it, or why they wouldn't be happy with ProRes. Blackmagic must provide what was promised.
