Feature Request: user addable codec and gui? Cineform.

PostThu Feb 22, 2018 11:07 am

Hi the pocket and many cameras are aging. But to go out with a bang, I thought it might be cool if it was possible to add a codec or change the GUI. Like adding the cineform 4:2:2 codec.

This could be done through a limited sandboxed development system. A sandbox provides limited safe access to the functionality of the system in a safe way to protect the camera. With limited access that does three things:

- Allow sensible changes to camera settings.

- Allow input of the sensor imahe data into sandbox where the image is processed (including image manipulation as well as compression).

- Changing or programming a new graphical user interface.

You may also allow reading of external controls, control the lens, setup wireless/interface display, controls and recording.

In this way active users can program cineform in, or other sensor, and adjust sensor speed and window safely for higher speed windows. They submit the code to the system, the system allows only what it allows and compiles it in.

Forget it. It looks that the main processors of BM cameras are Spartan FPGAs that basically are used as multicore proprietary processors. If so, any attempt to open source the technology would give the competitors too much.

Those older cameras might not even have enough computing power for Cineform encoding. It's a great codec, but it is computationally heavier than most other mezzanine codecs, and these were BMD's first foray into cameras.

I mention cineform because it was designed to need less productive clearing resources, for a wavelet. It is a matter of experimentation. But cineform has been done in fpga before I believe.

Inviato.

In sandboxing you don't reveal or touch the priority coding, it remains secret.

All you do is provide an seperated space in which to put routines, etc.
