Request to moderators to enforce the real name policy

PostFri Mar 22, 2013 8:56 am

There has been a lot of noise lately on the forum with the majority of trolling coming from the anonymous posters who do not follow the real name policy (surprise!).
Would it be possible to ban such users, remove their accounts, etc to make everyone's life easier?

It looks like Mr Grant's been banned. No update. No explanation of why the cameras do not get to Europe.

Nice to meet you, Trevor.

My point was that "coralio1" posted anonymously: No name, no link, etc.

I'm OK with people posting anonymously if their posts are helpful (such as answering specific questions), but coralio1's post isn't that.

If someone has a strong opinion about something, especially if it's a strong criticism of a person or company, then they should use their real name.

Otherwise, it's OK with me to ban anonymous posters who only or mostly complain & slander.

When it comes to discussing video hardware & software, "free speech" is not about throwing rocks over the fence and running away.

Video production professionals have names. In a sense, it's all they have. I'm OK with strongly-held professional opinions from identifiable sources. Anonymous posters who hide behind the internet and throw stones are trolls, and IMHO should be banned.

Any professional forum, I think, needs 100% real names (see Cinematography.com or Reduser). We are all professionals or aspiring professionals here, and as such we much look upon the others on the forum as peers, as they must look upon us.
Leaving behind a trail of our professional personas is par for the course therein inasmuch as it will link to us when future clients google us and as such foster, I would hope, a more civil tone to the dialogues on here.

Thanks for the support, guys. I sent a few requests to users today, but we typically don't ban anyone unless they repeatedly post hateful or insulting posts toward other users. Or if they post spam. Gotta get rid of that spam!

To anyone reading this thread who is not using their real first and last name, you can change your username in your Account Settings, here: ucp.php?i=profile&mode=reg_details We do believe that using real names will improve the level of discourse in this forum. Thank you!

Or at least your real name in your undersign.
I can understand a lot of people register under there company name. Just take 2 minutes and place your name in the sign ;)

+1. This is very hard to argue with, and would at least live up to the spirit of identifying those who wish to post.

If you're not willing to remove your mask, people are going to assume you have something to hide.

We don't really need to require real name usernames. The internet never NEEDED it before, and doesn't need it now. Just populate your profile information. It's that easy.

Any anonymous anyone is able to read posts...it is not unreasonable to require a full name to make posts on the forum. Posting "privileges" could be granted after a full name appears in UID or signature.

Hi "Sammah": I'm puzzled by your post. Have you "populated your profile information" so we can tell who you are? (Maybe I'm just missing it?)

Cheers.

or link to site with name? I think its a good way to direct traffic to your stuff. and maybe we people on here don't want random anyones knowing too much or at least censoring the personal info they see.

Here we are again, another week, another (or the same person under a different pseudonym) person with no real name is making outrageous claims and using quotes by well known cinematographers to support such claims.
Yeah, we really need to enforce the real name policy.

Well, if it is enforced, people will just put real looking names in their profile... there really is no difference between "l33troxxor999" and "Harry J. Hudini", both are equal bogus but one makes people happy...

Don't enforce unenforceable rules please, it is pointless...

Which is NOT to say that people posting crap shouldn't be moderated/banned/kicked whatever, but that is a different discussion...

I think people in this forum create or destroy their credibility based on the stuff they post here. I don't need to see the real name to figure out, who to take seriously on this forum and who not. But feel free to enforce the policy... half the people asking for it on this thread aren't following it, themselves...

Not sure why the fuss over this. Personally, whether I used my real name or not it would not change what I post on the threads. Do you guys really think if everyone used their real name it's going to change any of the posts made?

Yes.

I don't think it's a perfect solution, but even if it only makes things slightly better it'll be worth it.

And the fictitious names may prove entertaining ...
