Davinci cropping & output to 1920x750

PostWed Feb 28, 2018 8:41 pm

Using Davinci Resolve 12.2 and I cannot figure out how to output a custom cropped video when rendering.

I have a C mount lens and a visible image circle.

I would like to simply crop the frame to 1920 x 750 and output the result as a 1920 x 750 video.

I do not want to include the black bars above and below in the output when rendering a 1920 x 1080.
I would like to render to the custom video cropped size.

Can someone please give me some basic instructions on what option(s) to select.

Thanks.

Honestly, I feel like DaVinci flat out blows when it comes to outputs and renders. I spend so much time trying to get it to do what are simple tasks in Premiere and Media encoder.

If you're finding that resolve is giving you scaling issues when trying to output a custom resolution, I'd output at 1920x1080, and then run it through Media Encoder and output it as 1920x750 in there. It'll give you exactly what you are looking for.

Just to play it safe, sometimes post processing prefers dimensions to be a multiple of 16 or you might get an artifact. So if you can, 1920x752 may be safer. That’s still a 2.55:1 aspect ratio.

What is your timeline resolution set to? Have you tried changing the output resolution on the deliver page?

You need to go into the image scaling section of the project settings tab and under output define the custom resolution you want to use. This will cause problems with image scaling so you'll need to adjust the timeline settings as well. Once set up "correctly". you'll have the 2.5:1 timeline. It's pretty chunky, I don't understand why you can't just do this in the deliver tab instead of chasing your tail through the project settings.

1) set your timeline resolution to 1920x750

2) set input image scaling to center crop with no resizing

3) choose a deliver format which allows custom resolutions (in this case, to 1920x750). This would include all the DNxHR settings, as well as others. What won't work are deliver formats with fixed resolutions.

If you don't care about displaying the footage at 1920x750 in the course of editing, you can ignore 1 and 2.
