Constantly crashing on Windows 10 computer

PostMon Mar 05, 2018 9:51 am

Hi,
I've been using DaVinci Resolve for about three weeks and it crashes constantly, making it virtually unusable. Occasionally I might get 10 minutes of editing time before a crash, but normally I only get 2 or 3 minutes before it crashes. Sometimes I only get a few seconds of usage before it crashes.

Often crashes happen during video playback but they can also occur at pretty much any time, such as making a simple move of the mouse.

I'm running a Windows 10 PC. System and GPU details are below. I've created a diagnostic log file which is available on OneDrive: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aod3F_lz9uxshlJWmalrJ2zRV00l

I've also exported the project: https://1drv.ms/f/s!Aod3F_lz9uxshlXRpgz4vP8wbD9L

Any help will be most appreciated.

Regards
E.

I am certainly no expert, but in looking at your base configuration and that it is a "all-in-one" computer with only 2GB of integrated video, I am pretty sure your system is not really ideal for DaVinci Resolve.

The demands this program places on video GPUs and systems memory probably just overwhelms your system.

Someone else chime in if I am wrong, but...

I wondered if this might be the case. The interesting thing is that when I run Task Manager, it shows the GPU running at very low levels around 10%. That's why I wondered if the problem was due to some sort of incompatibility.

Ethann, two questions. First are you running both the Intel integrated and the AMD GPU's?

Second, how are you seeing GPU values in Task Manager? I believe the Task Manager shows CPU but not GPU.

not sure your GPU is really going to get Resolve working, but you may want to try disabling the intergrated GPU and see if that helps

I can run Resolve on a six year old i3 laptop with Intel 4000 graphics. Not recommended, but it actually does work.

@Peter
Yes it has two GPU's. I'm not sure why.
The Performance tab in Windows 10 Task Manager shows usage of both GPU's in addition to CPU, Memory etc (screen capture attached)

@Jeff
Thanks. I'll try disabling the Intel GPU and see what happens.

What is the recommended configuration? Is it 16GB + 4GB GPU?

Although I have found that Resolve Studio tends to work better on low spec hardware than Resolve free, and that it depends on the kind of footage you are using. Some causes more problems than others.

Also ticking "interlace processing" causes more problems, presumably because it makes the GPU work harder.

I did try Resolve on a computer just using the Intel graphics built into my Coffee lake processor, which has a maximum of 1GB RAM. I was amazed how well it worked.

Ethann, thanks! I never noticed that tab, I guess because it's all the way at the very bottom of the list. (Or maybe it's a somewhat new addition to the list?)
