Blurry 4K image with Xbox One X & DeckLink Extreme 4K 12G

PostTue Feb 20, 2018 8:20 am

Hi there,

i am using a DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G to capture uncompressed video files of video game consoles such as PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One and Xbox One X via HDMI.

Now when I capture a PS4 Pro game with 2160p59.94 everything is fine. The image is crisp like you expect it. The PS4 Pro outputs the signal with 2160p59.94 RGB.

When I try to capture Xbox One X with 4K output, the image is blurry as if it is interlaced. With another capture card (Magewell AiO HDMI 4K Plus) everything is perfect.

I tried to capture via OBS which uses UT Video codec, the result is the same. I have attached the image below.

I use a Windows 10 Pro PC, with Samsung Evo 960 Pro M2 SSD (fastest SSD on the market), Intel Core i7 6700K & 32 GB DDR4 RAM.

When I use a splitter to output the Xbox Obe X signal to a 4K TV in addition to the capture card, the image on the TV screen appears normal and crisp, while the capture card still captures a blurry 4K image.

Here is the image, you need to download it to see the blurriness. https://imgur.com/a/60r9O

The video game doesn't matter, it is with all games the same.

Thanks a lot!

Cheers,

Stefan

Does anyone have an idea how this can happen? Do you need additional information?

PS4 PRO

Case 1
PS4 PRO Setting : 2160p - RGB (non HDR)
PS4 PRO Output signal : 2160p59.94 RGB444
Decklink Extreme 12G recognize the signal : 2160p59.94, 8-bit BGRA
Decklink Extreme 12G Setting : 8-bit YUV or 10-bit YUV
Screenshot : https://imgur.com/v0nKPua (Please download and view)
Result : blurry and interlaced capture quality. 10-bit RGB is black screen captured.

Case 2
PS4 PRO Setting : 2160p - RGB (HDR)
PS4 PRO Output signal : 2160p59.94 YUV422
Decklink Extreme 12G recognize the signal : 2160p59.94, 10-bit YUV 4:2:2
Decklink Extreme 12G Setting : 8-bit YUV or 10-bit YUV
Screenshot : https://imgur.com/EODLhov (Please download and view)
Result : Perfect capture quality

Case 3
PS4 PRO Setting : 2160p - YUV420 (non HDR)
PS4 PRO Output signal : 2160p59.94 YUV420
Decklink Extreme 12G recognize the signal : 2160p59.94, 10-bit YUV 4:2:2
Decklink Extreme 12G Setting : 8-bit YUV or 10-bit YUV
Screenshot : https://imgur.com/cj6WbfW (Please download and view)
Result : Perfect capture quality

So, When I capture the PS4 game, I use the 2nd(4K HDR) & 3rd(4K non HDR) method.

XBOX ONE X

Case 1
XBOX ONE X Setting : 4K & YCC422 Check (non HDR)
XBOX ONE X Output signal : 2160p59.94 RGB444
Decklink Extreme 12G recognize the signal : 2160p59.94, 8-bit BGRA
Decklink Extreme 12G Setting : 8-bit YUV or 10-bit YUV
Result : blurry and interlaced capture quality. 10-bit RGB is black screen captured.

Case 2
XBOX ONE X Setting : 4K & YCC422 Check (HDR)
XBOX ONE X Output signal : 2160p59.94 YUV422
Decklink Extreme 12G recognize the signal : 2160p59.94, 10-bit YUV 4:2:2
Decklink Extreme 12G Setting : 8-bit YUV or 10-bit YUV
Result : Perfect capture quality

So, When I capture the XBOXONE game, I use the 2nd(4K HDR) method.
I think 4K non HDR capture on xboxone seems impossible.

Wow thanks a lot.

I tested this with PS4 Pro before posting this, I made the expierence that YUV Output lead to no problems, RGB did - I didn't try with HDR.

For me it is important to have the exact same color space on every console, cuz I am doing comparison videos out of it. It is extremely annoying not to have an easy plug an play solution.

So basically there seems to be an incompatibility issue with PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and their 2160p60 RGB signal output. This is something, the devs could fix if they wanted to.

I can confirm every problem kjhmagic wrote. Seems to be a general issue. If someone has experienced the same issue, I would be glad if he or her posted it here :)

I think DeckLink Extreme 4K 12G is not support to record 2160p60 8bit 4:4:4 RGB.
Even though 2160p60 8bit 4:4:4 RGB is not exceed hdmi 2.0a bandwidth, 12G is not support that.
It is too bad......
DeckLink Extreme 4K 12G tech spec is here.

8, 10, 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 in all modes up to UHD 30p, and 8, 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 in all modes.

So you want to record 2160p60(non HDR) source, other company product will needed.
2160p60 HDR source is supported because it is 10bit 4:2:2 YUV source.

I never tried with current gen consoles, but I was never able to get mine to take a 2160p60 RGB 4:4:4 signal from a PC.
Ryzen 5800X3D
32GB DDR4-3600
RTX 3090
DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G
Resolve Studio 17.4.1
Windows 11 Pro 21H2
