Converting a Coax (television air antenna lead) to HDMI

PostFri Mar 23, 2018 7:13 pm

I know this is below most of you guys radar, but I have an issue.
Need to pickup a off air antenna television signal from coax, and get into an HDMI cabel to plug into a Sony receiver. Won't bother you with details unless you ask.
Is that possible? Not really interested in the video as much as the audio signal to be used in sound system fed by the receiver.

Thought Blackmagic might make a converter of some sort.

Many Thanks in advance.

Are you referring to the TV set coax antenna connection or a cable TV coax connection?

You are going to need something like a Panasonic HDD video recorder that has a Video Coax input and HDMI outputs. We used these for on-the-air backup recorders when doing remote location broadcasts of public meetings. You can find them used in Ebay. The HHD recorders also have rca audio in and out connections, which might work better than an HDMI feed.

Does your Sony receiver have RCA audio inputs?

Since you do not need the video.

Can you describe the workflow.

Yes. The Sony receiver has rca inputs.
Issue:
The TV is located 20’ from the receiver and other sound/video boxes. In another room.
The TV is a Samsung wall mount.
All input’s to receiver are picked up at HDML OUT and feeds the TV via HDML Extenders over network cable and works well.
Problem: The ARC function from TV will not work as anticipated with the ARC function to receiver, so I. cannot get TV sound back to receiver for use in the surround sound speakers.
Solution I am exploring: since the TV main antenna feed (Coax) terminates at the same point where the receiver is located, and is then routed to several TV’s, I could pick it up and input to receiver ahead of the TV! Woops!! I just talked myself out of this idea because I could not get the particular channel data at that point. Oh well. Thanks for listening.
If I could just figure out how to make the ARC function work. Samsung people are ass’s and won’t help telling me the Samsung TV ARC is “incompatible w the surround sound speakers (not the Sony). Brilliant huh?

I used the old Channel Master converter box.
The old one only had RCA and S-Video outputs.

The new one includes a HDMI out.

On further reading this thing records the input.

*Enabling basic recording capability requires a USB drive (Flash or Solid State), minimum 16GB and maximum 128GB. IMPORTANT: The USB drive must be a new, first-time use device in order to be properly formatted for use with ConverterBox.
