Dell XPS 15, i7, NVIDIA GTX 1050 experience

PostWed Jun 07, 2017 5:44 am

I need to be mobile and my anemic Microsoft Surface Book i7 won't run Beta 14 without constant GPU full errors and constant crashing. It runs 12.5 just fine but as you might imagine, pitifully slowly. I've been considering purchasing the latest Dell with the Kaby Lake i7 and the NVIDIA GTX 1050 GPU. I'd sure like to know if anyone is using it with DaVinci Resolve and if so, I'd be delighted to hear your experience.

I have tested Resolve 12.5 on a colleague XPS 7700HQ, GTX 1050 and is usable for editing and light grading in 4k. The problem is the GPU 4 GB Vram that it can be a limit for 4k delivery. I did test also optical flow + some basic grading in 4k and it did work.
Problem with Resolve is that when you it the Vram limit it doesn't render anymore. If it would have had 6 GB Vram would have been a safer investment.
If the primary role of the notebook is mobile editing and grading I would recommended a gaming notebook with a 1070 8 GB Vram, there are some good 15.6 gaming notebook with the new GTX card. For casual editing with light grading you can probably live with the XPS but you could have problem rendering in 4k with heavy grading.

I own the XPS 15 9560.

It's far from optimal for Resolve 14. Ok for small jobs. But grading cDNG in 4.6K is not a pleasant experience.

Last but not least, this notebook is not very stable.

Thank you, Ronnie, for testing DR 12.5 on the XPS 15.

Beta 14 is supposed to be up to 10X faster than 12.5. This could be a dream come true for mobile editing! Has anyone in the forum tested the Dell XPS 15 with NVIDIA GTX 1050 and 4GB VRAM on Beta 14?

Has anyone tested Beta 14 on any laptop at all?

I'm testing right now a Asus ROG 15.6 7700HQ, Gtx 1070 8 GB Vram with r14 b3 and is quite usable. I can edit and light grade in real-time on a 4k 50p timeline. Source material are 4k 50p MJPEG. I only had to switch to FullHD timeline (or use half resolution proxy) for real-time noise reduction preview. With 8 GB Vram you should be able to render almost all type of grades/efx in 4k not sure you will be able to do the same on XPS without the memory full issue.

Don't be to hopeful with the 10x speed because on my tests is a bit faster r14 but definitely not 10x. h264 is better than 12.5 but not there yet.

I've purchased the XPS 15 9560 you see listed below. DaVinci Resolve 14 Beta 4 now uses the NVIDIA GTX 10** series built-in decoding/encoding of H.264. I can now edit UHD 4K without having to first optimize or trans-code and I can now render H.264 quickly. And very importantly I have the added advantage of watching my videos in 4K resolution before I upload to YouTube. So far the Dell XPS 15 9560 is everything I wanted in a laptop.

Hi Gary,

I have the same model laptop as you but I am unable to get any 4k playback, editing anything working. It's choppy and completely unusable. I've had to switch to HD timeline and down scale all the 4k footage to hd and generate optimized media otherwise I cannot use Resolve at all.

I'm running Version 14.0.B.051. Ive tried changing my hard drive settings to AHCI, update my drivers to no avail. Any tips on how to get my XPS to actually edit this 4k footage would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

Jamie.

Jamie,

The Dell XPS 15 9560 has models that range in price from USD $979 to $2525 with each step up adding more powerful hardware. Which hardware configuration do you have as that might be the problem?

I bought the $2525 configuration you see below. That configuration coupled with my purchase of DaVinci Resolve Studio is giving me the performance using 14 Beta 6 that I'm talking about. I can even run my timeline natively at full UHD and it still runs smoothly with no dropped frames. There is no need to optimize first. It's just load and edit!

Gary,

I have the identical XPS15 to your specifications in your signature. I've tested Premier, Resolve 14 public beta and Edius 8. Edius 8 has been the only one that hasn't crashed while trying to edit native 4k video. Resolve doesn't crash but it is completely unusable. I live in Vietnam which makes it pretty impossible to get hold of version 12 and the physical dongle. (which in 2017 still requiring a dongle is absolutely ridiculous). I can't test 14 public beta studio as it requires a license from the previous version and the dongle. I see on the forums that some people say 14 won't require the dongle but has there been official word from BM on this? Seems insane to require a dongle for software these days.

It appears that upgrading to studio is the solution to my problem but I just don't have access to it to try it or to even look at the software. Why they don't provide a trial for studio I don't understand. I hope when 14 is actually released I can buy it digitally like I can for Mac. Although the Mac App Store price is still $500 unlike the advertised studio price of $299 everywhere else.

Thanks for the information Gary, I guess I'll have to wait till 14 comes out in the hopes I can buy it for a digital download only.

cheers,

Jamie.

Jamie,
Representatives from BlackMagic have said on this forum that there will not be a dongle requirement with the release of DR14. They also said that 12.5 to 14 would be a free upgrade and there would be no dongle requirement for 14.

I then called BlackMagic on the phone and asked them directly if this was the case. They assured me that it was. With this assurance from two different BlackMagic sources, I went ahead and bought Studio 12.5 for $299 USD with the dongle.

I bought DaVinci Resolve Studio from bhphotovideo.com. I've purchased photo and video gear from B&H for years and they are very reliable.

None of the other NLEs will match Edius performance on such a "limited" hardware.

Apparently there must be a caveat to your statement as I'm editing 4K H.264 source using DaVinci Resolve Studio 14b6 on the admittedly "limited" hardware listed below with my timeline amazingly set to 3840 x 2160 UHD. I'm editing real-time with no optimization. I can JKL forward and backward with never a single dropped frame even when I double and triple my speed. I never would have thought this possible. I couldn't be more amazed or pleased! The caveat appears to be that I'm using DaVinci Resolve Studio and not the free version.

I did not say you can't do it in Resolve, just that overall Edius blows other NLEs when it comes to simple editing on resource limited hardware.
Try Edius 8 on the same machine and share your experience :) There is 30 days trial. Just for fun- maybe you will discover that there are many things which can be done these days- you just need correct tool :)

With all due respect, I'm less than impressed with my first impression of Edius after looking at their web page and I'd rather not waste my time. I'm more than happy with the performance of DaVinci Resolve Studio on my hardware.

Gary,

I was also skeptical due to the grass valley website looking like it was made by a 12 year old in 1999 in front page. I had however seen a few people say it does work with 4k and after testing it. I can definitely say it does exactly what you claim studio does. Thing is, I can actually test Edius 8 and know it works. As I said I live in Vietnam so its pretty much impossible for me to buy from anyone including BH as I can't receive mail here. Studio is cheaper than Edius 8 however Edius 8 just works. It actually feels like I'm editing 720p footage its that responsive. JKL works extremely fast with not just one or two stops but all the way up. I/O JKL is so quick and usable. I really like resolves interface and editing system but without testing it I'll have to wait till 14 comes out to buy it. This project I'm currently doing will be completed within the 30 day trial for Edius so this will do for now.

Pity BM don't have a studio trial and they force you to buy it to actually test the differences which is a bit cheeky if you ask me. Their comparison of the two is much left to be desired. Why don't they just flat out say that 4k is not supported on limited hardware in Resolve? I have no issues paying for 4k support but a nice clean comparison table would be nice to justify the price.

cheers,

Jamie.

Have not been on GV (it actually belongs to Belden brand now, after been a Canopus and later Thomson owned) website for a while. It looks "strange" gently saying :)
Here is much better website which is Edius dedicated:

I have the same system. xps 15, i7, but the laptop struggles with 4k footage from a drone. As soon as I add a cross dissolve it stutters on playing the transition. I don't know if it's a setting of the laptop or the software. Resolve is definitely using the nvidia 1050 as I can see that in the task manager.

Any advice welcome.

I'm using Resolve Studio on an HP Spectre x360, Kaby Lake-R, 15" model. Resolve actually runs surprisingly well on it using just its 2GB Pascal-based GPU (mx150), as long as I keep the timeline at 2K. Go over that and I get GPU full errors.

Plug in my Razer Core with a 1080Ti and I can use whatever timeline resolution I want. I'm getting interactive playback on it playing 8K footage at quarter resolution, and rendering a 90-minute film in around 3 hours with that setup. It's a passable machine for this, enough to tide me over until I get a solid desktop.

It does however struggle with drone footage, that plays back pretty poorly so I transcoded the footage with LightWorks to Cineform, and that plays fine.

I am looking at the identical model Gary uses:

-Dell XPS 15 Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 4K Ultra HD - 4GB NVIDIA Graphics GTX 1050, 32 GB RAM, 1TB SSD -- This is on sale at Costco for $1,799.99 now. I would use Davinci Resolve Studio 14 with this PC.

OR the

-2017 Macbook Pro 15" -- AMD Radeon Pro 560, 16 GB Ram, 512 GB SSD and with that I would use Final Cut Pro, which is from everything I'm reading incredibly fast (but of course only available on Mac). On "sale" for $2,599.99 at Best Buy or like new on Amazon for a little less...

I've been going back forth for days now! I really want to use FCP I think, but not sure about the Mac, I'm native to PC's...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Resolve 14 would be quite fast on that Dell... :)

Plus you can add an eGPU to boost it even more...

Well, if only Dell after so many years would be able to make a laptop without coil whine... Just read that latest models still suffer from this problem (although much less). For me this is just totally unacceptable after all those consumer reports and few generations Dell still can't fix it. Unacceptable at this price level. I had one of the older models and this annoying noise was simply intolerable and crazy frustrating.
They still don't match Apple in terms of machine overall build (Apple's internal components are way better chosen) and stability.

For HD both will work, for UHD none is really optimal.

True. I'm using an HP Spectre x360 these days... it rocks. But it's still not ideal for working with larger than 2K without an eGPU. It CAN work with larger, but that doesn't make it ideal.

I didn't realize that Dell hadn't solved the coil whine issue. It seems like its competition has.

Of course, now there's that nice new Lenovo Yoga X1 with the HDR screen (sweet) that has two Thunderbolt 3 ports and works very nicely with eGPUs...

... and the upcoming HP Spectre x360 built around the Kaby Lake-G chip, that is basically a Kaby Lake-R but with a Vega GPU built into Intel's new multi-chip package.

I had one of the older models and this annoying noise was simply intolerable and crazy frustrating.
They still don't match Apple in terms of machine overall build (Apple's internal components are way better chosen) and stability.

For HD both will work, for UHD none is really optimal.

My Dell laptop listed below has none of the "coil whine" you reference.
After more than 6 months of using this laptop with DaVinci Resolve Studio 14, for what I do, I'm more than pleased. I can edit H.264 natively at 4K UHD resolution quickly and with never a dropped frame. The 4K screen is gorgeous and accurate. My Dell XPS 15 9560 is a pure joy to use.

I'm not a professional either and not saying that XPS is bad machine.

I had 13inch model (only few days was enough) and since then there were another 3 generations or more. Current one (13inch) still has coil whine issue. Maybe 15inch is better in this regard. I keep tracking every new model, although after 20 years using PCs I'm not moving back from Mac. 3 years proved that Macs are still another league compared even to best PC laptops.
I did like this soft touch of Dell and form factor (tiny bezel). For Mac- their touchpad is simply unmatched for me.

Screen in your model even if is definitely decent still falls bit short of equivalent Mackbook Pro model:

I'm definitely not fan of new Macs prices, but so far company pays for it, so I'm covered:)

The resolution of the Macbook Pro model you reference in the article is only 2880 x 1800.
The resolution of the Dell XPS 15 9560 is 3840 x 2160 which is 4K UHD resolution.
Since I'm working in 4K UHD, I want to see my videos in full 4K. I'm afraid the resolution of the Macbook you referenced falls way short of my requirements.
Perhaps Apple has a newer laptop with higher resolution?

Gary, you may have considered this, but you only see the full resolution in cinema viewer mode and when you play back in another app at full screen.

And if the laptop can do it without a hiccup…
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Yes, I often review full resolution while using Resolve. But mostly I was referencing looking at my finished product and viewing it in full screen 4K resolution just as others will see it. For me there's no substitute to seeing a 4K UHD video on a 4K UHD screen.

You want pixel by pixel preview but in 15inch screen UHD resolution 'gets lost'. There is a reason why Apple screens use this specific resolutions. It's not a random choice.
Having UHD resolution in 13 or 15 inch is about pointless (same with phones). Waste of power and resources.
I don't know how it's now but Windows scaling was crazy poor and nothing looked good on those UHD screens as everything had to be scaled. OSX scaling is also done in special way compared to Win and use to blow it by miles.

Play UHD video on Macs 2.8K screen and UHD screen and watch from normal distance (or even fairly close). You will have hard time to tell which is which. This is again difference between Apple and others. They din't blindly chase resolution, but done proper research to come with optimal resolution for given screen size.
They do have 5K screen in 27inch iMac, where it makes sense.
Such a 'simple' preview (Resolve) with refresh mismatch is never smooth. At least use good player (eg. mpv, madVR) which can minimise refresh mismatch 'problems' or ideally use TV with BM card.

You are correct in saying that for a given screen size ,resolution "gets lost", but that depends, of course, on the viewing distance from the screen. My actual measured viewing distance from my laptop screen is a measured 10 inches. At my normal viewing distance resolution does not "get lost" and I can easily see the difference between UHD and HD.

Yes, but Mac screens are 2.8K, not HD.

10inch is not recommended distance for 15inch- it's more like 20-25inch. At 10inch you almost touching screen with your nose and can barely see screen corners.

10 to 12 inches is the distance I prefer to use when reading or using my laptop computer.
A Mac vs PC conversation is not constructive so I'd prefer to not continue.

Gary do you have the samsung or the Toshiba ssd in your xps? I have the same laptop as you but can not get playback in the resolve editor many dropped frames in hd and 4k. I would like to know why yours works and others don't. Have you done anything our of the ordinary to get it to work?

Unless you're working from your internal drive, it's largely irrelevant beyond how quickly Resolve starts up. Playback is more dependent on the disk bandwidth as well as what port you have it connected to... i.e. USB 3.1 is generally faster than USB 3, so I've found that I get better performance when using a USB-C port rather than a USB-A port, just due to the difference in USB 3.0 vs 3.1.

Also, the deBayer resolution is a huge factor. The higher you set it, the slower your playback will be. During editing I usually leave it at 1/16, though I can get away with as high as 1/4 with the eGPU connected.

Enabling smart caching helped, and there's always the proxy option, though I've yet to have the patience to let Resolve generate enough proxies to make a difference. Smart caching has been quite helpful though, especially when I've added several effects and/or involved grades to a lot of clips.

I have the Toshiba SSD. So I don't think the SSD has much to do with playback.

To get the performance I'm getting requires using Resolve Studio. In my experience you won't get smooth real-time editing using the free version.
