What should I use to connect the SSDs I record on to my PC?

PostSat Mar 24, 2018 4:06 pm

Hey guys. I'm having a little trouble here. My blackmagic Production Camera uses SSDs. I've shot some test footage and now I'm trying to figure out how to get the data off of the hard drive. I had bought a connector that I'd put the SSD in and it would hook to my PC via USB. That had its own external power source and everything. Well, I tried that on two different computers and it never registered it as a device in use. Nothing ever came up. So I returned that and bought one from amazon (B00HJZJI84)which was like 1/4th of the price of the thing I originally had, and now on one computer it registers as a USB storage device. But it doesnt let me access the drive, view data, or even pretend there is data on it at all, even though I can do footage playback in the camera itself.

My question is what do you use or how do you pull data from your SSDs after shooting?

How are your SSDs formatted? If you formatted them in HFS+, that's a Mac-only format and a Windows PC won't be able to read them.

I'm using one of these bad boys: Image

I format all my disks in ExFAT, which works well with both Windows and OS X.

I have a Hyperdeck Studio and so the same problem. I tried two converters to USB, but both didn‘t work smooth. Because I have a Desktop-PC, I was able to connect the SSD directly by SATA. For this, I led the cable back through the slot plate.

I prefer the "Toaster" shaped hard drive docks for desktop computers....

I use a pair of these in my main workstation. Very happy with how they perform.
