Trouble grading then compositing inside Resolve 15

PostTue Apr 10, 2018 3:54 pm

Now that Fusion is integrated into Resolve 15, I'm trying to grade a clip in the Color tab, luma key it in the Fusion tab, and render it with alpha. However, grading in the color tab doesn't seem to transfer to the Fusion tab outright.

The only solution I can get to work is creating a LUT in color, then applying it in Fusion. The problem here is that when I apply the key, the LUT is ignored. I attached a screenshot to demonstrate. What is a good solution here?

I may very well be out of my depth here, but...given the placement of the pages, it seems like you should be doing the Keying in Fusion first, and then grading that output second.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The DP has hopefully taken care to provide an image that is balanced for keying. If you perform a color correction prior to pulling the key, you will only make things more difficult for yourself or your compositor.

In addition, if there are changes to be made in a composite, it is relatively unlikely that they'll be so extreme as to require regrading. But a change to a pre-grade will definitely require a change to the comp. Hence, the grade should typically be performed after the visual effects.

It is not uncommon, however, for a compositor to work to temp color provided by a DIT or an editor—they won't use that as their input, but only as a LUT through which to view the end product. Likewise, vfx can often make a temporary slap-comp so the colorist can get to work ahead of getting the finished composite.

All that said, it would be nice if Resolve were flexible enough to permit the user to make the determination of their order of operations rather than having it enforced by the software.

Page 2-52 of the new 15b1 manual starts a section detailing all the order of operation chains for different image processes. Color is processed two steps after Fusion MediaOut results.

I agree having some way to toggle this to a before / after would be nice, particularly for shots where you want to grade a CGI composite separately from the plate underneath. You could probably pull this off by stacking FG / BG clips and then applying a color group (or a shared color node!), but it seems like an explicit toggle for each MediaIn node that jumps Fusion processing to before or after grading would be the best solution, if that's feasible.

Am not a fusion user but check fusion connect clip workflow.
As it may now cooperate with internal fusion instead so you can maybe send a colored clip temp rendered via fc to fusion to do your comping . Or something like than. Not tested as dont know fusion so jus have a peek.
The fc workflow outbound (which i do use but not for fusion ) is now rebranded vfx connect.

If you must absolutely have Color before Fusion, please refer to page 180 (Chapter 11 2-54) of

As mentioned, it's definitely the right workflow to color after VFX. If you do it the other way around, any minor tweaks to color will mess up your keying settings. Or you will end up having to color correct the previously colored image, which might lead to restrictions.

Fusion has within it the ability to apply luts to the viewer alone. This allows a more technically pure workflow where the actual images are untouched with regards to their color "spaces". Instead, the artist simply views their work through a lut so that they have a more convenient image to look at.

Of course if you really want to alter color first, the Fusion has a wide range of color tools built in it. They're not what you might call "colorist friendly" though :-)

There are limitations with compound clips though (particularly if things get re-edited), and not all comping involves keys.

Check out this presentation about the integration of Lustre and Flame:

Is this still the same.

Sorry, but people who are saying that you should only have the CC after Fusion aren't being reaslistic. There are many occasions where you may want to CC before compositing (it could be balancing cameras prior to key, colour correcting for cameras with sensor errors etc

Or in the case I have right now, using the superior noise reduction in the Colour page prior to keying.

I'll add this to my request list for v16!!!

What about a compound clip to force grading before Fusion?

To come back to this topic: how DO you grade the subject in front of the greenscreen without also grading the added background with it? I tried two media in and outs that come together in a parallel node in Color but that does not work (my added background reverts back to greenscreen once I do this). Thanks! :)

Do you know that you can grade in Fusion too?

Grading in Fusion is like pulling a tooth. I don't think this is a weird question.
Edit: for a bit of a rude tone on my part.

for teh most part, if you have log files, you should be able to color in fusion with minimal corrections and just to make the exposure and white balance match the plate, all the creative color should happen after the compositing in color.

My question is: if I'm working with a plate that is already color corrected. How do I then grade the subject in front of the plate without affecting the plate?

Thanks for your response! I'm really new to compositing; what do you mean exactly?

I would add a second MediaOut node on the Fusion page and pipe my Key to that MediaOut. Then on the Color Page, add a second Source Node which will be the output of the second MediaOut node, then connect it to an Alpha Output. You should be able to color correct the foreground and background separately now.
