Thought there might be some people here who would be interested in this project we're undertaking:
We've launched a campaign on Indiegogo.com to raise the funds to buy a high end film scanner (about $100,000) so that we can offer discounted professional scanning to filmmakers, artists and small (usually underfunded) archives that deal with 8mm, Super8 and 16mm film. Because these formats weren't used for feature films very often, there usually isn't the financial backing to properly transfer them to digital before it's too late. Our goal is to make this affordable for them. We're not talking about low-end film transfers, this is a proper 2k scanner that's sprocketless, uses optical pin registration instead of a physical pin, and can also transfer optical and mag audio. It's designed to work with film that severely shrunken and damaged, without damaging it further.
Indiegogo works like Kickstarter, so we're offering some scanning services for your home movies at some contribution levels, but we're also offering professional DVD and Blu-ray authoring, as well as 2k feature film scanning for 16mm films at higher levels. So if you think this is interesting, we'd love a small contribution towards it, but even if you just pass the word on to people you know who might have some old home movies, that would be awesome.
