Zeiss lwz3 21-100 mm t/2.9-3.9 lens

PostThu Jun 07, 2018 2:01 pm

What is ur opinion on Zeiss lwz 3-21-100 mm t/2.9-3.9 lens for cinematography? How is it's overall optical quality? When compared to fuginon cabrio 20-120 mm t/3.5,and the angenox newly released ez zooms ? Please reply

I’ve got one on order. There’s a nice Abelcine evaluation in a doccie context. EZ zooms are awesome but you need both and that’s almost 3x the cost, plus you’re changing lenses. Seems to be some uncertainty on whether the 20-120 covers the full 4.6 sensor.

I think the Zeiss is a good compromise. Sharp, no breathing, parfocal and light weight.

I rented one from lensrentals.com. It's pretty sweet. It's heavy if you're used to DLSR zooms, but light if you're used to cinema zoom. I found it sharp across the zoom range. It's main criticism is the variable T stop, which did't bother me as I never did any live zooming. In general, the change is hard to notice from shot to shot (mostly shooting documentary style out of doors). I can't compare it to those other zooms, never tried them, but I compared it to my prime lenses and it holds its own for sure. From a simplicity point of view, it's hard to beat. If I had the budget, this is the lens I would buy

But why take our words for it, rent one and see for yourself.

If memory serves me well, the Zeiss is a different optical design than most zooms that ramp the iris. For example my Fujinon 7.8-156mm only changes the iris from T2.4 to T2.6 approaching the extreme telephoto range. That ⅓ stop is barely noticeable if at all. But the Zeiss lens ramps through the entire range of the focal lengths.

If you’re using it as a variable prime that’s not an issue as you can adjust exposure with each change if focal length selected in a shot. But zooming anything more than a small portion while recording is definitely going to be noticeable on a BMD camera that isn’t compensating for the continuous change in aperture. So not for me.

Right Rick, but Zeiss markets this as more of a variable prime lens.

I was looking for a T2 18-180 parfocal cinema zoom that weighed under 3kg. For that I was willing to stretch my budget to extremities - say $12k. Of course I came up just slightly short for this mythical beast.

Jokes aside - relatively inexpensive cinema zooms are a massive compromise, so you pays your money and makes your choice.

This will be an off sided comparison, as yiu are compairing two different focal length zoom ranges, and the images are going to be slightly different, but otherwise, both are Zeiss Glass... ;)

Seems to me the choice here is more about the focal length range. Or, are you asking if the two zooms can be cut together, with out seeing the difference?

Well, there's this from Zeiss themselves:

From what I understand they are making quite big claims about the sharpness of the LWZ - although obviously it's a bit slower than the CZ's.

Being the sharpest kid on the block may have its value depending upon your needs. But it’s going to be interesting to see how Zeiss Supreme primes perform and how they are received as they are intentionally designed not to be clinically sharp.

The Zeiss looks sharper to me, even though not “razor”sharp, it has more snap to the image and a clearer looking image.

Perceived sharpness is quite different from measured resolution. Read about Otto Schade's research:
http://informationdisplay.org/IDArchive ... Image.aspx

Zeiss knows quite well about this and is designing lenses for micro-contrast, not (necessarily) max. MTF.

Yes, Perceived sharpness is more import than actual MTF sharpness, thr audience is going to judge an image based on the Perceived sharpness they see.
