Decklink 10-bit GUI output?

PostWed Jun 27, 2018 7:10 am

I invested in a 10 bit monitor so I also need to upgrade my gpu or output solution to support 10-bit.

I was hoping I could still use my new monitor in tasks like photoshop and make use of 10-bit like I would be able to using a quadro. Is this possible when I drive this using a decklink card?

Cheers,
Karel.

No, you'll have to connect the monitor to your graphics card to do that.

Ok, but does it still function as a normal GUI display output, just in 8-bit? Or wil the monitor not display anything unless using resolve, premiere or supported apps like photoshop?

Cheers!
Karel.

It does not appear as a monitor to the OS like you are expecting. It will only work with apps that support using a BMD output device, and that support is for fullscreen video output.

In professional video production, 10bit and colour accuracy on your GUI monitors is not particularly important. On the other hand, your Decklink card guarantees you see a reliable 'Video' signal feed to your full screen Reference Monitor which should map pixels at 1:1. Running a full screen display direct from your GPU will only offer your computer's 'interpretation' of a Video signal which could be quite misleading.

Your Reference Monitor's correct calibration (to Rec.709 for example) is far more important than whether it shows an 8bit or 10bit display.

The image on the User Interface is not particularly important re: grading judgement -- but yes, on the Decklink grade monitor output, it is. Eight- or Ten- bit'tedness doesn't contribute to chromatic accuracy per se, but higher chroma depth will yield a smoother rendition. It will tend to hide 8-bit issues that may result in later compressions when the bit-depth is reduced (banding #1 issue). This will be a more serious issue with HD, and even more serious with UHD resolutions, where 12-bit is really more appropriate.

Yes, I use a calibrated IPS Computer monitor as a Rec.709 Reference where we see a 10bit RGB 4:4:4 display. This HD monitor is driven from a 12G Decklink card via an SDI to Display Port converter but it is a Computer monitor, not a proper Video monitor.

If I was offered for example, an 8bit HD, FSI AM210 SDI 'Video' monitor for the same price as a 10bit 4K 'Computer' Monitor, I would chose the 8bit FSI every time. Depending on your client base, correct calibration can be far more important than 8bit vs 10bit.

Worth noting too that a correctly calibrated HD Video monitor can still be used to Grade 4K material as several 12G Decklink options have on-board hardware 4K > HD down-converters.
