URSA Mini Pro Issue Shooting 60P

PostTue Jul 10, 2018 3:25 am

So, I shoot quite a bit in UHD 60P using the Off-Speed Recording with my Project Frame Rate at 23.98 and the sensor frame rate at 60P. I've not had many issues with audio drift until firmware 5.1.1. I never tried 5.1 to confirm if the issue was introduced there.

Basically I bring my footage into Final Cut Pro X and put it on the timeline. I break off the audio and then speed up the video by 250% and the audio then exactly matches the video. This was great until 5.1.1. Now the audio is off in each clip and by a variable amount.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? My clips are generally 2-4 minutes each.

When Off-Speed recording, audio never has been in sync because the audio and video part of the camera are not interlocked.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Adam, if you’re speeding up the video in FCP X, is recording in camera with a 60 fps Project frame rate an option? Depending upon your client requirements. I use 60 fps for events. Then the audio and video will match.

Hi Guys,

Hi Robert and Rick. Thanks for responding. Robert, you are correct that when shooting in off-speed recording that the audio and video are not in sync. They shouldn't be. I probably wasn't clear when writing this post.

Since owning the UMP, I've been shooting quite a bit in off-speed recording mode in 23.98/60. I've been able to sync the sound pretty easily up until firmware 5.1/5.1.1. How do I do this?

I drop the footage onto a 23.98 timeline in FCP X. It shows up in slo-mo as expected with the sound attached running at 23.98, so the sound is normal, not in slo-mo. Following me so far?

I detach the audio from the video and speed up just the VIDEO by 250%. Now, the sound is in sync with the video. Still with me? For the most part, this has worked for me without any issues until firmware 5.1/5.1.1.

Now, when I speed up the footage by 250%, the sound doesn't perfectly sync and is off by several frames.

Anyone else having this issue?

Adam, thanks for clarification - although I understood it already like this after your first post :)

The question is then: What has changed in firmware since the last version it worked for you?
I'd go through systematically:
1. Make sure you recorded 60p/23.98 and not 60p/24 in camera. (Compared to earlier work)
2. What happens if you use your footage in FCPX in a 24p project? Does it sync better then? Same? Worse?
3. What happens if you do a 60p/25 test? Does that sync correctly?
4. At your 60p/23.98 - what if you speed up the video by 250.25025% - does it sync then?
5. If you speed up video by 250% - what if you speed up audio by 100.1001% (or slow it down to 99.9%)?

Note: to be precise 23.98 is 23.976

Hi Robert,

For number 1, I'm absolutely sure I'm recording in 60p/23.98 and not 60p/24. I'm using a preset, but I also just looked at the menu, and it's 23.98 for Project Frame Rate and 60 for Off-Speed Frame Rate.

I will check 2-5 tomorrow and come back with results.

Yes, 23.98 is 23.976. I only rounded up because I wanted to be consistent with camera settings.

Sorry for the delay. I've been traveling for the past couple weeks. I'm beginning to think that I must have messed with a setting to cause this. My latest footage is not experiencing the problem I had. I am going to shoot a long clip 4+ minutes to see if the sync issue has anything to do with longer clips.
