Tri-Level Sync For 1080p59.94

PostTue Jul 10, 2018 2:35 am

Hi! My installation will be 1080p59.94. I want the installation to be proper and correct according to official SMPTE standards.

Do I use the Mini Converter Sync Generator at 1080i59.94? I could totally imagine that the clocking would look the same on a scope. I'm just trying to ensure alignment with SMPTE standards.

Thanks a ton!

That should work, as Tri Level Sync is analog anyway. However, I do not think their is a HD SMPTE standard for 1080p60, as this is not a broadcast format, like 1980i59.94 or 720p59.94 are.

Denny is correct. It is best to use the 1080i Tri Level Sync. I think there may be a 59.94p tri level sync from someone but not in our sync generator. 59.94 analog sync is not likely to be a SMPTE standard at this point.

59.94 blackburst (NTSC SD sync signal) and 59.94 tri level will both produce the same results when clocking gear. it's the frame rate that counts here. some gear will pick up on the i vs p difference in tri-level and put them in the correct mode. otherwise you have to set manually. i have some older gear that will not accept tri-level so we have to revert to using BB when these pieces are in the system. also have a yellow brick unit that produces both BB and tri-level simultaneously. in any event, it's all about getting everything to start their frames together.

This is fascinating! It makes me wonder why BMD doesn't simply state 1080p59.94 under supported specs for the sync generator. Is there a technical reason why they don't or shouldn't?

You're looking at analog format support. BM doesn't list 1080/60p for the same reason they don't list any 4K resolutions, those resolutions don't exist in analog.

Good Luck
