3D Navigation

PostSat Aug 26, 2017 3:54 pm

Is it me? Am I missing something? Becoming senile with no muscle memory? I find the key/mouse button combinations to navigate the 3D view so counter intuitive!

Me too, but that's because I normally work in C4D. I'd rather have a standard too…
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

I think it's just the odd key combinations used. I've used modo, mari, softimage, lightwave, substance. Different key combos yet there seems a natural logic to them:)

Come on Blackmagic, can you make this wonderful app even better? I have no idea what this means in coding terms and guessing I'm being very naive. :)

At least make it an option to set up different keyboard shortcuts for navigation. The default keycombos are hard to get used to coming from other DCCs

try navigating with the mouse.... much more intuitive than keyboard shortcuts.

LMB+MMB = zoom
MMB = pan
RMB+MMB = rotate

Pressing two buttons at the same time is not a good solution for me. Im really struggeling with that.

Being able to customize viewport navigation to something like:
alt + "one mouse button of you own choosing" would make life so much easier.
Most DCCs use some variation of this scheme.

Not that I am aware of. But the "FIT" button at the bottom of the viewer will do that, albeit at the expense of an extra button push. It will also centre the selected object around which view rotation will happen.

I'm having issues with wacom pen and zooming in a 3d window, zooming works fine in the 2d window and panels, but seems to only zoom in randomly when in a 3d window.

Using Fusion 8 and Win10.

Rick,

Try hitting "f" when the view port is selected, should take you to our object.

Yes please. Have an option in preferences, or just add it by default, to navigate like every other 3D program out there. ALT + left, middle or right click.

The development so far has been rapid and a welcome change. But if BMD wants to gain more Fusion users they should make it as easy as possible to transition from other programs.

Cheers, Ryan. But like Bonsak I find the two button mouse press, especially with a scroll wheel and left/right movements just too...argh.

I did find the Touch Scrolling & mouse Wheel options under User Interface helpful to a degree.

There must be some Whizzkid or Whizzsenior out there that can come up with a way to emulate this behaviour?
Something like: when in 3dview, translate this input into that input...
Unfortunately, I wouldn't know how to achieve it :(

I really like the maya view controls. If BMD ever decides to change the navigation of the 3D view that is the way to go. I've to say that I really like the 2D view navigation in Fusion.

New user to fusion and argggh, the 3d navigation is giving me carpel tunnel already.

I've always liked the "hold a button and use one of the 3 mouse buttons to track, rotate, zoom" approach. I don't even mind what that button is, alt, space whatever. but the double mouse click thing is so counter intuitive. Please BM give us some option to set this how we please :)

Where does one buy an actual three button mouse anymore ;)

I'm happy with my work around. I use a side button mouse and map one of the side buttons to behave like the middle button. I've never been able to use the wheel for anything but scrolling.

I agree, the 3D navigation is horrible. This is the main reason why I just can't work with Fusion. I tried so many times but I always ended with a frustration. Please Blackmagic, make a custom shortcut/mouse setup for 3D navigation for Fusion and Resolve15. Or at least the standard ALT + left, middle, right click. (Maya, Houdini and other 10 apps standard). Thank you.

Same for me. I use blender a lot and the 3d navigation is different than the other software but the ability to custom navigation in fusion will be fantastic.

standard ALT + left, middle, right click. (Maya, Houdini and other 10 apps standard). Thank you.

I came here because was looking how to change navigation. it's really annoying! I am all for this too... or at least for an option to change to normal navigation I'm used to: alt + LMB/RMB/MMB

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Does the shortcuts manager now allow to change the 3D navigation in Resolve 16/Fusion tab ???
Sorry I can't test myself. All other apps allow the industry standard (as an option to their navigation) except Fusion.

Another vote to let the user map keyboard shortcuts for 3D space navigation. I'm coming from Houdini and is annoying as well. At least give the user a few more options to navigate.

Making the key/mouse combinations user configurable gets my vote too. I'm currently learning multiple software and it's a nightmare trying to keep all of the different keyboard shortcuts and key combinations straight in my memory. It would also be great to imitate Blender 2.8 (and other 3D software) and provide on-screen widgets that you can grab and drag to pan/rotate/zoom. When the user hovers over one of the widgets there could be a tool tip that displays the keyboard shortcuts. That would be easy for new users and would help them memorize the shortcuts.

+1 here too, the controls are very awkward. There are plenty of standards set by more established 3D software that Blackmagic could be using instead of this.

But let's be real. No one from BM seems to listen to anyone on this forum. Just look at how far back this thread goes without any input from Blackmagic.

I really like Fusion, but we need to hold this company's engineering team to a higher standard.

+1 here as well. I use a Kensington Slimblade four-button trackball and it's impossible to have any tilt control! Terrible.

I have to say...the near-total lack of nav options is close to being a deal-breaker for me. So many competing platforms out there - I mean, even Blender has custom nav control options...an open-source, popular platform, so what the heck are we paying good money to BMD for, to get forum radio-silence back from them on fundamental aspects like 3D nav views!!

+1 for navigation ergonomy improvements. Fusion has the worst 3D navigation I have ever experienced in a 3D Software. So counter-intuitive, so unprecise, so difficult to handle. This is really bad.

Make it like Maya.

I use a Wacom, so it's pretty painless to fly around but every time I try a use a mouse or a track pad, it's torture trying to click down with the scroll wheel.
