Solutions for external 4K monitoring without selling kidney?

PostSun Aug 05, 2018 12:03 am

I use DeckLink 4K MiniMonitor on my PC, and I use UltraStudio MiniMonitor with my laptop.

MiniMonitor helps a lot when I'm traveling, but the problem is: with a laptop, only 1080 can be translated, not 4K. Sometimes it's a pain :)

Does any solution for external 4K monitoring exist aside of $1000 UltraStudio 4K - something portable and reasonable in price, like MiniMonitor but with 4K resolution?

If you want to keep your kidney, why not check color and contrast fidelity in HD and use a cheap UHD screen to check sharpness? Seriously, I don't know anything for really low-cost fidelity.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Can your laptop handle 4K in the manner that it would be nice to have proper monitoring?
Monitoring 4K timeline as HD work for a lot of cases.
If you are on the go, what monitor do you use? It's most likely so inaccurate that you may as well monitor over GUI preview with HDMI.

Yep, the laptop works pretty well with 4K.

For external monitoring I using any available TVs (which are 4K in many times); I understand inaccuracies for sure. Colorimeter helps a little to align it as possible. MiniMonitor works for that, 4K version would be better :

But also, at my location I have a descent 4K monitor which I would like to use at full scale. MiniMonitor is not enough there.

One of the solution would be to buy TB3 expansion box+cheap 4K BM PCI-E card, like DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K. Problem is that whole thing gets bit convoluted. Cost would be around 500$ though.

Why not? You set monitoring to Data Levels in Resolve setting. Should work, but also may be problematic depending on TV.

Thank you Andrew! How I missed the solution with an expansion box? :)

Will check how Data Level works, too.

One more question please.
Seems like MiniMonitor slowing down the playback. When it is disconnected, I have realtime 30fps, when it is connected, I have something like 5-9fps. Is it normal?

It will slow down, but it should be more like 5-10%.
There seems to be issues on some systems with BM preview.

Make sure you have fairly latest GPU drivers (make sure compute GPU is fast one, not Intel).
Look at your main Resolve preferences, User/Playback Settings. Select both options: Hide UI Overlays and Minimum interference. Note that 1st one affects LUTs behaviour. Read on forum about it.
There may be some issues with the way how data travels from your GPU to BM card (due to your thunderbolt non-direct path).
