UltraStudio MiniMonitor recognizing as MiniRecorder

PostFri Aug 03, 2018 4:11 pm

Hello!

I have the following setup:
Windows 10 on the DELL Alienware 17R4 laptop; UltraStudio MiniMonitor connected to Thunderbolt 3 port via the CabbleMatters Thunderbold 3 -> 2 adapter.

And I have the problem: DaVinci sending only a black screen to the external display.

As soon as DesktopVideo installed, the new MiniMonitor device appeared in Device Manager, and DeckLink Capture Device appeared in all browsers (Chrome, FireFox) instead of the default web camera (and it overrides the device selection - even if I select WebCamera manually, it doesn't work till DesktopVideo uninstalled). Same time, the Desktop Video app itself, Thunderbolt manager, and DaVinci ResolveStudio all recognize the device correctly, as MiniMonitor, when it physically connected.

And I'm sure that all those hardware is fine, and this it is not a hardware but a software problem.

The problem appeared when I installing the Desktop Video app, the MiniRecorder device appeared in DeviceManager instantly after installation even without MiniMonitor and adapter physically connected.

I tried everything I can, reinstalled, uninstalled, upgraded and downgraded DesktopVideo, cleaned Windows Registry manually from any records related with this app, nothing helps.
Everything other works just fine. Even sound translating to the external TV via HDMI from Windows, but DaVinci translating just muted black screen.

Please, help!

PS. This setup used to work before, then, something happened - I don't know what exactly. No any major changes in the system have been made.

If it worked then most likely some OS update etc.
Try testing card from MediaExpress to establish if it's Resolve only or any app.

What is Media Express?
But seems like it is a system-wide issue. As soon as I installing DesktopVideo, video calls in Facebook got broken because only Videos Recorder device going to be available in all browsers, instead of the system webcam; and it returning to normal after Desktop Video deinstallation.

It's indeed some changes in OS or so, but I can't track down what it was :/

Capture/playback app which comes with BM Desktop Video installer.
Try removing dll which makes BM card showing as Windows DMO/directshow device.
Maybe some app accesses card automatically, so it's always "busy".

Interesting. I just tried to chek another device (the 4K monitor), and opps, it works now.

Just yesterday I tried to figure it out with a 4K TV, without any luck.

So, at least I can roll down the priblem to some different things and two different parts.

Part 1. The software issue with Mini Recorder in browsers instead of the webcam. This problem still here - installation of DesktopVideo override the system camera.

Part 2. The compatability issue. If video minitoring working with one display but not with another, it may be a sime external problem with a display itself, or with a cable used. Will check it out.

With some monitors or TVs it is very important if you are sending true progressive signals or PsF (progressive 'disguised' as interlaced). Test these options!
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Studio 18.6.5, MacOS 13.6.5
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM and iPhone 15 Pro
Speed Editor, UltraStudio Monitor 3G, iMac 2017, eGPU

Do you mean SDI connection or HDMI?
There is only some indirect relation between psf and HDMI.
If you set card eg. to 25psf then depending on manufacturer/settings you get 25p or 50i on HDMI. Other than this psf has nothing to do with HDMI. PsF also affect only old equipment as about all new hardware do support "real" p.

Hi!
I found that I have the same issue at my desktop PC with DeckLink.
It doesn't affect the grading monitor's connection, as well as it doesn't affect the connection via MiniMonitor - but it affects camera access ib any browsers: I can't do video calls in Facebook Messenger anymore because the Recorder device is only available instead of the system camera.

Seems like it is an issue not with a hardware but with the Desktop Video app. The problem appears as soon as Desktop Video installing, and if I uninstalling it, things going back to normal.

Two different PCs with different hardware, booth WIN10

Any ideas?
