Importing IphoneX 240fps into Resolve 14

PostFri Aug 10, 2018 6:05 am

Hi Guys,

Please don't shoot me, i'm completely a noob home user, i've been using DaVinci for a while now but only on a domestic capacity (i edit our camping vids shot on mobile device)

We have just come back from an epic trip to the northern most tip of mainland australia, all shot on an iPhoneX @ 60fps, i have however shot some b-roll with 240fps.

when i import this into DaVinci 14 i only get Audio, any ideas?

PS, 240fps filmed on a samsung galaxy s9 works fine......

Thanks a million in advance, i appreciate your time!

Maybe Apple is using a new compression for that speed which is not supported by your hardware?
Which hardware and OS do you have? Are you using the free version?
Maybe AI can help you. Or make you obsolete.

Chances are, it's variable frame rate, not sure if this is supported.
The frame rates you choose on a iPhone are just in approximately, not exact.

I told you so :-)

Apart from the terrible compression, it plays fine here in version 15 beta8.
But it's HEVC, and I doubt the free version will decode that under Windows.

I'm using 14 at the moment, and I know you can't run the side by side, and I'm pretty sure they changed the was the database works.... But if I have an existing project, would I be safe to upgrade without losing my work?

Rather not. Make a separate boot disk and install it there – the safest way in my opinion.

Try : http://virtualdub2.com/
(base is FFMPEG)

Filter : interpolate => 30 FPS or change FPS = 30
Save As : (*MOV) cineform or Prores

and test on a project HD @30fps.

Hi Warren, yes, you can use Handbrake ( handbrake.fr ); I will try it myself on you video-file in a sec.

or Handbrake or better still, Scratch PLAY Pro - probably the best converter out there now AND it will encode genuine Apple 'certified' ProRes on a PC...

With latest Resolve v15b8 Cineform is best choice as you can easily decoded at half resolution if needed making UHD files working in realtime even on low spec machine.

BTW, the 240 fps of that test clip seemed spot on, so that doesn't seem to be the cause.

OK here we go again, changed to a desktop PC the a better GPU, but this one won't see the video in the files....weird hey!

Windows itself could not play the file until i installed a codec pack, now windows can see the thumbs and will play the vids with the default player.

Can anyone recommend a converter to convert the format only and retain the 240fps frame rate?

And could i ask what format you would recommend i convert it to?

If necessary i can spin up a linux VM if i have to....

thanks heaps guys, having a ball with the software, just struggling to get over this hump....lol

**UPDATE**

OK another update, more for anyone who comes across this issue in the future, found this page;

https://www.thewindowsclub.com/play-hev ... windows-10

So i installed this (from microsoft, app costs ~$1);

https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NMZLZ57R3T7

And soon as i did, Resolve could play the 240fps HEVC files from my iPhone X

All happy now!

Thanks all

Any FFMPEG based GUI should work - Handbrake or V6 has some cute audio tools as a well: (http://hdcinematics.com/wnorton/) transcode to any of the I-fame pro format with timecode such as prores, dnxhd, cineform, etc
