Intensity Shuttle USB not recognizing 1080p

PostTue Aug 14, 2018 1:04 pm

Intensity shuttle does not detect a 1080p signal from my sony a6300. It detects only the 1080i signal. This happens inspite of me setting up the cam frame rate at 24 (and making sure in the HDMI setting. of sony cam that the output is 1080p at 24 fps) with the BMD dextop video (vr 10.9.12 march 2018) set at 24 fps 1080p and the media express (vr 3.5.5 2018) also at 24 fps at 1080p.

Plus at 1080i the frames get dropped on the porsche external 1 tb drive.

what might be the reason for this mysterious behaviour ...of black magic?

It appears the Intensity Shuttle does not work with progressive video signals, interlaced only, see:

I can use/capture the Intensity Shuttle (component connection) in Interlace or progressive mode, 25 or 50 frames.. @PAL SD resolution
maybe the external drive can't catch up.
My experience is, that you have to double check if the settings for the Intensity Shuttle have been correctly stored after the save, (check also the selected input)
The cable isn't longer than 3 meters ?

@denny.. he does 1080P24 Which still falls under the 1,5G standard.. P50/60 is a different story.. ;)

While you have set your output of the camera to 1080P24. hook it up to a TV and hit the INFO button. What does the TV tell you? Is it really 1080P24?

The Intensity can handle up to 1080p30 according the BMD specs,
found this on the BMD website:

Thanks for replies.
Cable length is 1 mts have tried 1/2 mt - same issue persists
I use HDMI port on sony to output the signal from my sony cam (the cam unfortunaltely doesnt have component output)
Issue of dropped frames - I think this was due to external drive. I use my internal drive to record now. This is solved.

But no progressive signal ...inspite of low frame rates (on cam, on hdmi output settings of cam, on the video manager and media express) and highest versions of softwares everywhere..on the cam..on the blackmagic and on mac book pro 2017. I expected it to do alteast 30p at 1080 now i am begging for 24p.
I took a very small cable and connected the cam to the laptop (retina display mac book via a USB 3.0 to thunderbolt adapter). This is a USB 3 version of the shuttle - but i think a USB 3 to thunderbolt should support the progressive to mac book.

Looks like the magic is missing. :(

Dropped frames with a Sony camera is hinting to me that it's outputting PsF rather than actual 24p. Check the settings in Media Express for PsF capture and try capturing footage again.

The Intensity Shuttle does not "detect" anything you have to set all the resolution features of the camera in the software, And with me a Porsche design 4TB external drive is also too slow, the capture stream is just too fast for the USB and drive, that's just a big no-go, I'm also looking for more (fast) storage....

ok found the problem. The driver was 3 months old so downloaded the recent. Then it supports 1080p at 24 fps but not 30 fps. Also works only NTSC mode. Does not support progressive at any low frame rate in 1080p in PAL.

Regarding external Hard drives. I use a class 10 U3 128 GB SD write speeds of 95mbps via a card reader to thunderbolt adapter on mac and it shows a supported resolution of 1080p 30 fps ProRes HD. Works fine for the first 20 min then another 20 min of recording it detected dropped frames. So using the disc speed check utility from blackmagic I found its write speed as 35 mbps. So I tested the prosche external drive and it did 120 mbps via the thunderbolt. But while recording it again drops frames after 20 mins and stops.

Blackmagic has extensive software issues I guess.

Your bottleneck could be your Intensity Shuttle USB3 version, which has bad to no support on the Mac OS, plus, the cardreader might not perform that well, i use a MacBook Pro early 2015, :( while the SDD external "market" is mostly via the USB-C <> Thunderbolt 3 interface which have 2 data lanes that are very fast.

The problem is also with sony a6300 HDMI output settings. It appears that the only way to get a 24 frame rate output from hdmi is to use the NTSC mode. The HDMI output cannot be changed to 30 frames but it can do 60 frames. In PAL mode there is no setting of 25 frames on the HDMI output selection option in the camera hence only 60 frames are sent via HDMI no matter what you record internally on the SD card of cam. So between the two things the camera a6300 and the blackmagic intensity shuttle the only useable HD option is in 24 frames as the other output is straight away 60 frames (in PAL or NTSC). In PAL mode there is no 25 frames output via HDMI...it is all 60 frames. No wonder my other monitors flicker in PAL mode as they cannot support the higher frame rate.
It is painful to find out these things on your own. These things are not mentioned on Sony website too.

Strange ... are you sure ? because NTSC = 30 and 60 fps PAL = 25 and 50 fps on most cameras, and 24 fps can be used on both systems, could it be you have recordings with multiple different frame rates plus interlaced and progresive ?
The Intesity Shuttle only works with the correct settings.
Also keep double checking the software setttings, Video Desktop Utility/setup and Media Express, or the one you're using, sometimes they don't get saved.

I just looked up the A6300 HDMI output, and found:
Resolutions & Framerates
HDMI video 4K UHD 24p, 25p, 30p
HDMI video HD 1080 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p, 60p

So it looks like the camera can output the normal frame rates in progressive.
Not sure about interlaced, but perhaps the OP has the output set to interlaced in the menus, which would explain his results.

btw. the PsF (Progressive segmented Frame) "standard" is some kind of half way there for scanning 24 frames of analog celluloid movies for easy conversion in the digital world, in an only digital world it should not appear anymore... :(

Also keep in mind that the resolution settings have to be set twice in the correct way, Once in the Desktop Video Setup/Utility, and your capture program, when i startup, i check these settings each time for their valid values of the project i'm doing.

Re: Intensity Shuttle USB not recognizing 1080p

Also Eric, PsF allowed for a true 1080p24 transfer on HDMI 1.x and early 1/2G SDI cables that only supported 720p or 1080i due to bandwidth limits, and not use the 2/3rds pull down. Doing this yiu could get a quality 1080p24 recording to an external recorder like the PixE or Atomos early recorders.
The Panasonic AF101/a used this via SDI to outout 1080p24 at 8/10-bit 4.2.2 to external recorders. Otherwise output on SDI was SD or 1080i.

But today, you are correct, no longer needed, as we have UHD 30/60 video resolution available on HDMI and 12G SDI. :)

Thanks for this info, Denny, well, then it's not a complete waste, and will help this "standard" in some cases, where needed, it looks like the more one knows, the more complicated it gets, an advantage of digital conversion is, that there is no loss or minimal, while analog gives you more loss, in quality.
I am now a bit puzzled how to convert the analog PAL to the 720 by 576 format, i see allways more than i like in the 720 by 567 format, small black pillars, and distortion up and above.
