BM RAW workflow

PostTue Sep 18, 2018 10:02 am

Hi guys can anyone make a comparison on what the BM Raw Q0, 3:1 etc represent? For example does the BM Raw Q5 5:1 equal to ProRes HQ? How does everything compare?

Thanks :)

Ivan BRAW is 12bit and will give you better Colour than ProRes HQ 10bit. The really interesting comparison will be BRAW versus ProRes 444/XQ. However that is comparing apples and oranges as raw is 12bit per photosite (monochrome) and ProRes represents three colour values. The bitrates for ProRes 444 and XQ are about 177MB/s and 265 MB/s respectively.

Q0 and Q5 (begs the question when will Q3 appear?) are in my mind the most valuable flavours in that they promise high quality detail and colour with a bitrate dependence on the scene. The fixed bitrate options are good and predictable, but the variable bitrate may give you the better image.

Someone with the URSA Mini Pro is probably working on a comparison video right now! Theory is trumped by the images you will see. The more complex the image, the more likely BRAW Q0/Q5 may become a favourite choice. Not so critical when the image is simpler to define as has been discussed previously by others.

Edit to reword the first paragraph.

I just posted on the green screen thread clips shot in various flavors. Not sure if it's at all helpful to you. Note: I didn't have much time to do this test, and no it's not a proper green screen. It was with a green roll of paper I had leftover from something. You are welcome to download the clips I've uploaded to google drive and form your own conclusions/analysis.
