Radeon Vega 64 or GTX 1080 TI?

PostTue Oct 02, 2018 7:48 pm

As xmas is coming pretty soon this year (o;

Which card would give a higher performance in DRS 15? The AMD Vega 64 or the GTX1080 TI?
Just asking as Nvidia hasn't released any web drivers for Mojave yet..nor any signs they will do so...
so currently running a GTX1060 on a H270-Pro4 motherboard...

The only GPU performance comparisons I could found was 99.999% for playing games...(o;

The Vega 64 has more shaders but only comes at 8GByte of VRAM....though has native macOS support...so guess dual GPU would be of a lesser problem than with RTX...

As usual it depends

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/DaVinci-Resolve-15-NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-2080-2080-Ti-Performance-1238/

VEGA doesn't run out of memory because of High-Bandwidth-Cache-memoryController.

VEGA FE would be a better choice (16GByte, 10 bits color overlay in OpenCL, professional drivers) when doing a lot of 8k work, but is more expensive $999

Well Vegas are attractive as their prices came down continuously...whereas GTX prices stay high due to high crypto mining demands...

I haven't seen anyone running a RTX2080 on his mac build as the drivers are not up to date...
but the Vega FE seems a nice choice as it is directly compatible with macOS 10.4.x

Thanks for the pointer though...last time I checked there wasn't any RTX mentioned (o;

Any other hackintosh users here or want to install macOS since the Linux version has more bugs?

RTX2080(ti) doesn't work on MacOS(nor hackintosh), I know one who got 4 RTX2080ti's and he can't get them to work, he tried dual-boot(windows and MacOS) every possible driver etc...
Apple is doing everything in their power to not make it work with NVidia cards.

Well I am aware of that as the last drivers from Nvidia are for macOS 10.13.6...

So a future version of DRS will have special RTX support only on Windows and Linux then (o;

So far I'll stick with 10.13.6 and wait until a new buyers guide will be published...
or a miracle will happen and the Linux version finally works when 17.1.2 is released ;-)

Hmm..Frontier Edition of Vega is unavailable in my country....guess it will be a single or dual Vega 64 then on a X299 motherboard ;-)

Hi.

I don't know where you live?
But I will like to tell you that there are two different versions of AMD VEGA Frontier Edition (FE) Graphics cards with 16 GB. One is Air cooled and the other is Liquid cooled. I expect that the Liquid cooled version is the best for use with Resolve?
Here is a link to some brand new Liquid cooled ones, and the seller ships to many other countries:

Well the only problem is then the import taxes to Switzerland...so it comes in the end to the same price as a RTX2080 TI (o;

Hmm...a little unsure now if I should really go the Radeon road....tonymacx86.com states:

As of macOS High Sierra 10.13.4, Apple has added support for the following AMD graphics cards. Please note these cards have only very recently become officially supported and may be more complicated to configure than NVIDIA graphics cards.

Look at the apple website which cards are supported. Apple only uses AMD cards these days.

Otherwise, just buy a RTX2080ti or GTX1080ti and see if it works.

I would say something like a RX570/580:

From my experience the GTX1060 feels to slow....had it running first on Linux...but moved it to my Hackintosh as the Linux version will not be fixed in the coming months or at all...

Also I noted that somehow since version 15.1.x GPU is almost not used in Fusion...there is also no CPU Fusion option anymore...

For macOS Radeon seems a must as most software rely on it...otoh there are other software which only makes use of a Nvidia GPU like octane or luxcore renderer...

I will decide by end of the year if it's gonna be Radeon Vega or GTX1080 TI, depending on available Mojave drivers for GTX or better price.

I think that at the end of the year you'll have other options from AMD.

I would rather prefer a price drop....it would take anyway some time until Apple would adapt to newer AMD hardware...

If anybody has the ability to try both, I'd like to know that answer too. I just got a 1080 Ti, because I didn't want the noisy Radeon (Pro Duo or WX 7100) in my system. As of yet the vegas are not in the DR config guide. For the card I went with, I didn't spend all that much more than a Vega 64 anyway.

Ordered also now a GTX1080 Ti for my system where I wiped Debian and installed macOS 10.13.6...

Decision was more based because I also use 3D render software like LuxCore and testing Octane...
and most 3D render support more Nvidia than AMD....

Only downside: There is, or never will be, nvenc for macOS ;-)

Got now a GTX1080 TI installed on my macOS machine...

When adding a simple call out in Fusion the playback performance is around 2fps though the timeline shows a blue line marking it is pre rendered...

What do I need for 30fps performance? 15 GPUs???

Hey Richard
I'm not experienced enough with Fusion to know what speeds you should be looking... but still, it might be worth checking the DaVinci Resolve > Preferences window >> Configuration tab ... make sure its seeing and using that GTX 1080 Ti GPU. Maybe check the different GPU processing modes too (same window), see which gives you best performance.

EDIT: Just saw your other thread ... looks like you tried all that already. Sorry.

Cheers
Andy

where is your cache saved and which file format it is? It seems to me a cache speed issue.

Well one side it might be cache....

In the project settings it just shows "CacheClip" and not the absolute path....so I changed it...
but still around 0.5 - 2fps playback for a 1080p24 video..

For for the GPU....it isn't used at all....either macOS 10.13.6 Nvidia driver issue or the faked machine settings are telling DRS that this machine can't have a GTX1080 at all (o;

In not sure which is your issue: if a clip is blue, it means that it is cached therefore the gpu will have little or no work to do.

If a cached file does not play, it is the driver where the cache it is saved that's too slow.
