Filled the SSD - best setting for MUCH smaller file?

PostWed Oct 10, 2018 10:16 pm

We just started recording with our Blackmagic deck last Sunday, and I looked down in the middle of our Sunday morning worship service to see that after 24 minutes we filled up our 240GB SSD. All I really want to do for now is get a quality recording with the smallest file size so I can edit it and upload to YouTube.

Sorry for such a newbie question, but in reading the manual I don't have a good idea of what to set it on, and I would sure appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

Which deck do you have?
Ryzen 5800X3D
32GB DDR4-3600
RTX 3090
DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G
Resolve Studio 17.4.1

You generally get around a gig+ per minute from HD HQ so that drive should be good for about 3 hours. You’ve probably not properly deleted the old media before recording. A fresh format of the drive should get you sorted.

Sorry... Our power went out due to Hurricane Michael. It is a new HyperDeck Studio.

We recorded straight uncompressed so it filled it in a hurry. I trashed that file and am looking for the most efficient setting now to record so I can easily copy the service to DVD and to upload it to YouTube.

The smallest format on that desk is ProRes Proxy, I believe. You should get plenty of time that way.

Thank you very much. I sure appreciate your help.

I backed down to one of the other codecs Sunday and got about an hour and 20 minutes into 100GB. I've taken it into Adobe Premiere and edited it down, and now I'm trying to find the best option to burn to DVD (yes, we still need to burn DVDs for those who may not have the Internet options).

Right now I'm trying the ExpressBurn app on the Mac to see how it works after whittling the file down to about 10GB. It's been running for around 40 minutes compressing and preparing the video to my little external burner, and I'll see how it works.

It was okay - I'm still tweaking to see if I can get better resolution on the DVD, but it's light years ahead of what we had before.
