New System Build Help, Please

PostSat Aug 18, 2018 11:36 am

Hello folks. Soon I would like to build a new system. Because I am not a computer guru, I am having a difficult time understanding what would be the appropriate system parts to get on a Win 10 system.

Is there someone that is willing to suggest a MB & processor, video card and RAM to get me started? I already have the SSD's. Most of my work is in 4K video so my current system is running Resolve Studio 15, but not without some hair pulling slowness. I have not even attempted the Fusion tab yet and probably will not until such time I have an updated system.

I appreciate the help. Thank you!
Anthony

Current Platform:
OS - Win 10 pro 64-bit
CPU- AMD Ryzen
Threadripper 14nm Technology
RAM- 64Gig G.SKILL F4-3200C16Q-32GTZR
GRAPHICS- Nvidia RTX-2080Ti (Studio Driver 511.65)
BOARD- ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. PRIME X399-A (SP3r2)

In today's world, you should solve that rather than trying to work around it.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I am researching a new build, and have settled on the following entry level threadripper:
1920x CPU, ASRock taichi MB, 32gb ram, gtx 1070 or 1060 gpu, noctua air cooler if the wraithripper and cooler isn't available. Of course u can go more high end with CPU MB and GPU if cost is not a problem.
W10 pro 22H2|X399 Taichi|TR4 1920x|64GB Hyper X@2133|
3060 12GB/Nvidia 531.41

Hi Anthony.

In Resolve the CPU is used to run the app, disk I/O and compression and decompression of codecs.
Resolve does all its image processing in the GPU on the graphics card. More CUDA/OpenCL Cores are better.

To recommend a video card is easy as everybody expect nVidea to launch their new line of graphics cards tomorrow Monday. For 4K choose one with 8-12 GB of vRAM. And more CUDA cores is better.

In the DaVinci Resolve 15 configuration guide is one of the suggestion on page 18 the AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPU.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/suppor ... and-fusion

All AMD CPU's loves fast memory, and on page 36 under GIGABYTE Motherboard:

16GB (4x4GB RAM) DDR4-3200 SDRAM minimum
64GB or 128GB or more recommend for FUSION

Last Monday, August 13th did AMD launch AMD Threadripper next generation with a little cheaper CPU's. The 16 cores 32 threads 2950X get much better reviews than expected and can be delivered worldwide from 31th August.

When I try to check prices don't I yet see any big price drops on the previous 16 core 32 threads Threadripper 1950X CPU's. So far for 16 core 32 threads CPU will I recommend the new 2950X. While I currently see some large price drops on the 12 core 24 threads 1920X CPU's.

Both the old and new Threadrippers CPU use a TR4 socket and a X399 motherboards. Suggest you to buy one with nice reviews. If you later want to upgrade to a faster CPU will I suggest you to buy a Asus motherboard, as they can be upgraded to a TDP of 250 Watt by buying the X399 cooling enhancement kit coming to September.

All motherboard have a QVL List you can find on the manufactures homepage. Here you can see what DDR4-Ram they have tested in that particular motherboard. The Configuration Guide recommend to use minimum DDR4-3200.

The cheapest recommended RAM is many times the G.Skill Flare X DDR4. The Flare X series is made special for AMD CPU's

The Threadripper CPU's have a 4 channel memory design. You will get the fastest system by using 4 DIMM's only, and leave the last 4 sockets empty.

Carsten,

I finally have gotten around to putting together a new system. I decided to go with the following components;

Asus Prime X399-A Board
Ryzen Threadripper 2950X Processor
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti AMp graphics card

There should be enough processing power to run DR smoothly on Win 10 Pro 64bit. The system is not built yet but I shall in the coming weeks.

Any thoughts or comments are welcomed. Thanks!
Anthony

Make sure you get DDR4-3200 RAM, CL13/14 timing, in a 4 stick kit (quad channel). Instead of 2080 Ti it might be better to buy 2x 1080 Ti or Vega FE. 2080 Ti is really expensive for the performance.

I'm looking at a new system build too. I was quoted the list below so wondering if there are any recommended changes or should I go with this list?

Intel i7-8700K 3.7 GHz. 12 Mb. Cache 6-Core-12 Thread LGA 1151 Processor and Cooling Fan
Gigabyte Z370 LGA 1151 Aorus Ultra Gaming Motherboard
Samsung 970 EVO 500GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD
Corsair Dominator Platinum 8Gb DDR4 3000 (Two for 16Gb Total)
GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11Gb Video Card
CoolerMaster MA620P Twin Cooler CPU Fan

Hi.

I am sorry to tell you, that both the CPU and motherboard on your list is outdated.

But AMD changed the market at its Next Horizon event earlier this week, where they gave the first demo of the Next Generation 7 nm Zen 2 CPU. The 7 nm Zen 2 Cpu will have more cores and come in 3 variants: Ryzen, Threadripper and EPYC. I expect AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su in her CES 2019 Keynote at 9th January 2019 to tell when the different variants will arrive.

In the same price range as your list, will I suggest you look at the coming Ryzen CPU with Zen 2. Even that I expect most Resolve users will look at the Threadripper CPU's with Zen 2 with its much higher memory bandwith. Here is a link to what I wrote earlier this week:

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=81684

If you really need a new PC before the end of the year, will I suggest you look at a AMD build with a fist Generation Threadripper 1920X 12 cores 24 threads CPU reduced to 400-450 USD together with a GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB Graphics Card. It will cost you more than the Intel i7-8700, but it is much better for Resolve.

I'm in no hurry for a new PC, so if some newer stuff is coming out soon, I can for sure wait. I would like to have one before summer 2019 though, which is the main time I'll be needing to do some video editing.

Hi.

Back in 2017 the first Gen Ryzen CPU's was in the Shops 2nd Marts. And the successor Zen+ CPU's was in the shops at 20th April 2018. I expect AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su in her CES 2019 Keynote at 9.th January 2019 to indicate the exact months it will arrive.

So I will still suggest you to aim for a Ryzen with 7 NM Zen 2, as it will be in your price range.

Regards Carsten.
