Decklink and Eizo CG319X

PostThu Nov 08, 2018 11:52 pm

I just ordered an Eizo CG319x which I have waited on for quite some time.
I just found some new documents on Eizos homepage that are not very promising.
According to this page the CG319X does not support the Decklink cards.

https://www.eizoglobal.com/support/compatibility/device/eizo_4k-video/index.html

Could this really be true, that the monitor cannot be used with a video card?
I thought that it was similar with video cards as it is with graphics card that as long as the TV can handle the resolution/data bandwidth it will be able to display the image.

Thoughts?

It seems to be supported with specific decklink cards as well as some SDI to HDMI adapter devices.

The only one that I see is supported is this one:
UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 which is very expensive.

But yes, maybe it could work to convert from SDI to HDMI.

I just talked to the company that sold it and they said I can test it for 30 days. So I think what I will do is I will get a video card and simply test it.
I guess either I could get the cheap mini that has a bit lower resolution (422 I think) or I could get the more expensive Decklink 4K Extreme that has full 444.

If nothing works I guess I could consider using a converter from SDI to HDMI or similar? Worst case I use it as my main editing monitor.
I was also surprised to see that their super high end 3145 monitor also does NOT support the Decklink cards either. The UltraStudio 4K Extreme is supported but well it is 2700 dollars which is a tad pricy for me.

I am not even sure how useful it is to output the image with a video card since I have never worked like it. To me it sounds that the main benefit is that you get a fullscreen image all the time, which of course sounds good.

What about the Intensity Pro 4K?

I found this SDI to HDMI 6G converted from Blackmagic
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/miniconverters/techspecs/W-CONM-26

Any advice would be appreciated, video output is all quite new to me.

I did some tests comparing image quality of 422 and 444 on my current 4k monitor.
I compared a raw photo from canon and a 10 bit DNxHR HQ (which should be 422) and also I tried saving Quicktime uncompressed with both 422 and Uncompressed.
From what I can see it is almost impossible to see the difference between 422 and 444. At least in this example which is nature with mountains and trees. I need to zoom in to 800% and then I only see tiny, tiny differences. This leads me to believe the Decklink Mini card, or similar, may be good enough.
After all I'm not grading in 422, but just watching the output.

Thoughts?

95% post houses (including biggest ones) run on 4:2:2. Quite often smaller ones have 4:4:4 monitoring where big post houses may have only some suites setup for 4:4:4. 4:2:2 is fine in most cases, specially when you uses progressive signal.

Thanks Andrew,
Which card/setup would you recommend. It seems as if the Deckling mini could work if I only use 422 and then maybe an SDI to HDMI converter if there is no image.

With Resolve you have not much choice- one of BM series.
For HDMI converter I would rather spent more for AJA one.

The converter from AJA, does it work with Resolve?

I tested the monitor and it is a big step forward from my "photography" grade monitors i have used before.
We were watching some Red Helium shots of gannets that we shot in 8k with 50-1000 and it was the first time I felt I could really see what they looked like.

Best,

Converter works with BM card, not Resolve itself. Give it correct SDI signal and it will work. Resolve has not much to do with it directly.

Thanks Andrew,
Maybe this one then?
https://cvp.com/product/aja_hi5_4k_plus?gclid=Cj0KCQiAoJrfBRC0ARIsANqkS_7iALMDLSk1lFAtJ_3GPyyi4kq95K5YySAHfD7lRTderDw4YDotNV8aAk7iEALw_wcB

Or maybe this one?
https://www.aja.com/products/mini-converters/hi5-12g
The last one was pretty expensive though.
Sounds like maybe a mini decklink and a converter could work for the Eizo screen.

When you use a video card to output to, does this lower performance in any way?

If you don't need 12G SDI then hi5_4k_plus is good enough. It's based on modern hardware, has HDMI 2.0 chip and allows to inject any HDR metadata into HDMI output.
With BM hardware 12G may be better option though.

Hey cris cros,

did you find a solution? Or anybody else?
I have the same display and I am wondering what i/o card I should purchase?! I already own the "ultrastudio 4k" (old thunderbolt 2 version) and was not able to get 4k to be displayed on the screen. Even after attaching the "terranex mini sdi to hdmi 12g" converter. Now I am very interested in either the "decklink 4k extreme 12g" or the "ultrastudio 4k mini". And, most importantly, I would like to know wich one is the best option to serve my eizo CG319x (4K).

Thanks

Hello guys,

can someone give a word about the solution they found?
I'm really interested in buying the CG319X and a video card but it is so hard to find informations about their compatibility.

What you guys found as a solution?

Thanks in advance
