Finding maps

PostMon Nov 12, 2018 2:52 pm

I'm working on a short documentary that will require showing a few maps, mostly with place markers although I might add animated lines (using Fusion) to show travel directions in a couple of cases.

I've done lots of searches online to find maps that can be used for this purpose but haven't yet found any straightforward solutions. Google's maps are proprietary, Mapbox appears to require an expensive paid subscription if you want to download maps, and scans I've seen of historical public-domain maps from places like the New York Pubic Library don't appear to be very high resolution.

I did find a plugin for FCPX that uses Mapbox data, so could use that if necessary and export to Resolve, but I'm sure I'm missing something. Does anyone here use maps in their projects and if so where do you get them from?

Have you looked into openstreetmap.org?

Yes, but the process for downloading high-resolution JPEG or PNG files is pretty convoluted and entails a level of geekery beyond my abilities, at least based on the research I did. I've been using OSM for years and it's great, but downloading a map for use in a video does not appear to be a trivial task, especially if you use Mapnik or one of their other recommended tools.

Although now on this page I see a number of options for exporting vector images from OSM and saving as SVG or PDF files.

My solution might be found in one of these tools. Thanks!
