Pocket 4k Battery Door Issue

PostTue Oct 23, 2018 2:13 pm

Just received my Pocket 4K (loving it so far) but its got a small issue with the battery door; it very frequently opens by itself. Am I missing something obvious and not closing it properly?

The mechanism leaves a lot to be desired (which is also true of the card door), but push it shut, don't use the latch. It should engage.

Thanks, that does help a bit. It still opens intermittently but ill probably just use a bit of tape so that it doesn't happen on shoots.

Heres a video of me applying pressure to the grip. This appears to trigger the door opening. Can anyone tell me if this is normal behaviour or am I making a mistake?

Pocket 4k Battery Door Issue

Tapping on the side shouldn’t release the latch so easily. Time for a slight redesign of the latch before BMD has a million of these cameras in circulation?

I hope someone designs and 3D print some better doors. One with a hole in it for a dummy battery cable.

Definetly not normal behavior.
It's not the most robust door but I haven't had any spontaneous openings.

Agreed. I'd prefer a more positive lock, but I haven't had it spontaneously open.

Just got my camera today.

The battery door keeps popping open (won’t stay shut for more than a minute, either held in hand or just laying it down)

It feels like there’s no spring on the catch.

Am I missing something in how this is supposed to work?

After waiting six months I really don’t want to have to send it back already

I contacted BM's RMA they asked me to send it back. It was a very speedy fix, I sent it on Thursday and got it back Saturday. If you really don't want to send it back, I would recommend just removing the door.

Ah I see. Cool I’ll contact them on Monday once I’ve had a play this weekend, hopefully it’ll be as quick as yours!

When I opened the box the battery door was already open which was a bit strange.

At least it’s nothing really bad

You guys are so fortunate you don’t have to deal with trade wars and Canada Customs delays.

Who did you contact? How could it take just one day? Where do you live? No official BMD repair here in Italy !

Same problem for me here in Italy. I also noticed that different brands of batteries behave differently. Some can't get out from the camera, some stay loose, some push too much against the door opening it more frequently. The construction of the body is very bad and the battery slot seems to be the worst part

Also having the battery door issue...very annoying! Is BMD gonna ship out replacement parts? I don't see why I should ship in because of a simple quality control issue...

I just got mine in the mail and saw the door open and as I lifted my camera it was completely busted. Nothing to the actual camera but the door and hinge was completely broken. I have to call Adorama tomorrow, but I waited 2 months for this camera if I have to send it back......Can black magic just send replacement parts to save time?

They did to me. I reported the problem (sent an e-mail) on Monday, received the new battery door in the mail on Wednesday. The new one works as expected.

I had the same problem and had to send mine back for repair, apparently ‘this is a known issue’ according to them. If you are having any kind of door problems, definitely contact BM for a replacement.

On a side note, can you guys do me a favor and listen to the camera mount and the fans when the camera is on? There’s a noticeable high pitched noise that’s gets captured on internal mics and I feel a good mounted mic would hear it too. Thanks!

Same here. Wrote to support.... That crappy door is a no go. And removing the door at all is no solution.

I agree that the battery door and the fact that batteries get stuck is a problem. Also - all my batteries including the one supplied use randomly die without warning (!!). This is a huge problem when operating on Canon batteries. The only way to properly operate would be external power, but my 12V input didn't work either (neither with wall charger nor P-Tap cable). Needless to say, I am sending the camera back today.

Same issue here, if i slap the side, the batterydoor opens.
I will RMA it when it's less bussy.

Folks, you don't have to return the camera. They'll send out a replacement door.

BMD team: just got my BMPCC 4K and the exact same problem – battery door seems happier open than closed.

Any chance you can just send out a replacement door, or do we have to RMA the entire camera?

Otherwise, great work and I look forward to BMD Raw!

Hey guys. Just wrote a post about this before seeing this one.

Exact experience.

Door pops open by itself and because the camera isn’t packed tight in the box, when it gets jostled around the door pops open. When it pops open it snaps off on the box insert as its now sitting in the insert and not secured in it.

I can engage the door opening just by tapping on the side of the camera by the door latch.

Frustrating.

BMPCC Battery Door Problem

PostThu Dec 06, 2018 4:20 am

My new BMPCC (sn5095615) arrived a few days ago and the battery door was open and had goughed the plastic packaging. I checked the door and it seemed okay and appeared to latch okay.

But, when using the camera, the door pops open frequently with no prompting.... sometimes when I open the media card door. Thankfully, the battery is held in place by the internal latch so operation of the camera isn't affected.

I searched the forum for a previous post, but found none. Perhaps a known issue? Suggested door fix?

I contacted BM and sent my cam in. Super fast service but I've heard that since, others have been sent a replacement door. Whilst you are waiting I suggest you just remove the door.

Raise a support ticket.

I got contacted within three days, had to fill in an RMA form and send my original invoice and a replacement door was delivered to me the next day.

Pretty swift and I didn’t have to send the camera off

I had one camera and sold it for a profit, it didn't have the issue. My second camera has the issue and I sent an email to BM and they said they would send me a replacement door ASAP and that I didn't need to send the camera to them.

I contacted BMD support, they sent me a replacement door, and I was able to install it easily. Thankfully, this solved the problem without having to send in the camera!
