4k multicam return feed 1080

PostFri Nov 30, 2018 5:09 am

I am setting up a multicam job using 2 Ursa broadcast, a BMD Studio Camera and a Micro Studio Camera; all in 4k (UHD) using an ATEM Production 4K.
Each camera run is about 40 metres but I only want to send return back to the cameras (for CCU, talkback and tally) as 1080 but it doesn't seem to work using the built in UHD to HD converter of the ATEM.

The reason I want to send 1080 back to the camera's because
1. 2160 is way overkill for purpose and
2. I don't want to run 4 x 40 metre cables back as all 4 cameras are at the same location.
What I normally do in a 1080 job is send 1 feed back and distribute the signal at the cameras. That equates to 1 long cable and 4 short cables.
Any suggestions?

Do the same, run a single long return cable from the ATEM Prgm out to the camera area, feeding a UHD Distribution box connected to the cameras with themshirter cable. On ATEM inout and output resolutions need to match. Any UHD to SD Converter might end up stripping out the return CCU commands. You could also use fiber instead of SDI for the distribution.
Cheers

The HD output on the Atem 4K models do not have Control and Tally data!! Just feed the cameras with your main PGM feed! ;)

I recently did a 4K job using 4 camera's where I needed return vision/CCU/tally to be 1080 because I was using BMD Arduino shields to control the lenses.

I tried the ATEM built in UHD->HD converter and there was no data in the output (and it was 1080i).
I then used an ATEM UHD output that I knew had the required data and put it into a Multiviewer 4 (it has down convert abilities) and it didn't work because it was creating a 1080i50 signal and the camera was running in 25P.

So I eventually put the ATEM UHD into a Teranex AV and converted it to 108025P and all the vision/CCU/tally worked. Hopefully someone will come up with a less expensive way of converting UHD to HD while retaining the return camera data.

The Teranex AV is the only way i know that works at the moment.
I asked BMD over and over again to include CCU and Tally data in the HD downconverted port.. As in 4K you wont be able to use a SDI shield now too.. Which is an issue if you want to do any control of your own.
