Resolve Studio 15.2: H265 NVIDIA encoder issue on Windows

PostFri Nov 16, 2018 3:05 am

Hi!

Looks like there is a bug in H.265 NVIDIA delivery encoder in DR 15.2
It renders first approx 65590 frames and stops with error "Recording failed with Error : Failed to encode the video frame."

No matter what project/delivery resolution or source format, no matter what delivery format selected (MP4 or MOV). No matter what bitrate or "Network optimization" or "Frame reordering" or "Main/Main10" option.

It just stops reaching 65590 frames (00:36:24 if footage is 29,97 fps) with error, but closes video file correctly (i.e. it is not corrupt). Looks like there is some nasty 16-bit type frame counter in the code which reach end (65536) and crashes with error. :) Very nasty bug.

Issue not happen with H264 NVIDIA encoder.

Win 10 1809 (build 17763.134), core i7-6700HQ, GTX1060 (driver 416.94).

dito
but with me only an unknown error message comes when I use H265 with the MAIN-10 profile.

if it helps with me, the GPU is a Titan X.

Re: Resolve Studio 15.2: H265 NVIDIA encoder issue on Window

PostTue Dec 04, 2018 7:58 am

Yes. Bug still exists in 15.2.1
I've made another test clip (just one photo) with long duration. Render stops with error when approx 65590 frames processed. No matter what FPS on project - 24, 29,97 or 120. It renders the time equal to "65590/fps" and stops.
Please fix it as this kill advantage of GPU endoding (it is really fast!) for long projects.

After 5 billion attempts to fix, this is annoying. Exact same problem, same number of frames.

Hmmm. I'm using 15.2.2 and just rendered out 6 videos each that were over 90 minutes long with h265 nvidia acceleration with no issues.

I was using 8700, quadro p2000, and 16gb ram.

Hello,

I just did a test from a project (statics photos and transitions with neasted TL ) that normally duration is 1:44:08 and from the 65536th frames => (see picture)

(I exported this project in DNXHR 444 1080p @ 25p without issue yesterday).

Ummm I will check :?:

I've downgraded to 15.1.1 and it *finally* renders past 43m41s (in terms of frames, almost the exact same place as you). I've done countless renders over past 24 hours with all types of settings with 15.2.2 - I think it's officially broke, or at least for some people.

So downgrading is a temporary solution but not ideal because this version has no NVIDIA hardware encoding.

I was having that render problem. I was running dual monitors and went back to using a single monitor. When I rendered h265 with nvidia acceleration it worked. When I switched back to dual monitors it failed.

My system i7 8700, GTX 1080, 32gb ram.

I am running 15.2.1

That's interesting, I'm on a dual-display so might try disabling the second one see if that works.

I have exactly the same problem. I tried the single monitor tip, but that didn't solve the issue for me. However, when selecting "Network Optimization", the issue dissappeared. Consequence was that rendering at a certain moment became really slow ... :(

Customer Support suggested me to downgrade to Nvidia release 399.24 and that solved the issue.

Problem is that this release doesn't support RTX-boards which I've on order, so would highly appreciate further suggestions if possible?

My system is i7-7890xe, GTX 1080 Ti, 128GB RAM, 2 TB SSD.

I'm running 15.2.2 Studio.

The Problem is the NVIDIA Driver - the only Driver which works is 399.24.
Drivers which do not work - which I tested - are 417.35 and 385.69.

Confirmed!

No way out here to encode in H265 a 45'00 TL in 60 fps.

Delivery is ~ 250-260 fps on average.(no effect => just native clips) :)

(does not work with version 417.35)

It could be the same issue Nero AG is having. Nvidia deprecated sdk 4 in v415. Basically 411 is the last version to support it. 411 driver might also be a workable driver for you guys.

That must be it. From http://forum.nero.com/nero_eng/topics/hardware-acceleration-problem-fixable-by-nero-with-help-from-nvidia.

Nvidia wrote:Please note: Support for Video Codec SDK 4.0 and below versions have been deprecated starting with R415. For apps that have this issue, we request the app developer to reach out to us directly at video-sdk-feedback@nvidia.com so we can help with this transition if required.

I guess BMD developers are aware of this since customer support knew to recommend an earlier driver.

I thought the "Recording failed with Error: Failed to encode the video frame." indicated a problem with the source video clips. Wasted alot of time before finding this thread. My thanks to the posters who identified the solution

As suggested, Downgrading to an older version of the Nvidia driver fixed the problem:
- File download: 399.24-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql.exe
- Windows 10 driver version: 24.21.13.9924
- Windows Driver Date: 9/5/2018

I am now able to use the Nvidia codec to export H.264 and H.265 MP4 video files. Unfortunately, playback of Nvidia H.265 videos using Windows 10 VLC player are blotchy/pixelated (gray patches blotting out 20% to 40% of the screen). Bit rate ~ 4,000 kbps. Anyone else experiencing bad quality with Nvidia H.265 encoded mp4 videos?

EDIT: 01/09/2019
Nvidia codec playback problem on Windows VLC Player solved by upgrading to latest version of VLC. Video encoded using Nvidia H.265 codec looks good (DV-AVI NTSC 720x480 to H.265 MP4 640x480).

I am fully impacted by this. I own a NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2080 TI as graphics card. The minimum required driver is 411. So I tested the 411.95 because above was mentioned 411 is still working. I can confirm it is not.

Maybe I have to remove my RTX 2080 TI and encode with the GUI graphics card only wich is a Quadro P4000 after downgrade to 399 ...

I hope Blackmagic finds a solution for this quickly.

That's to bad but BMD seems good about fixing issues. I'm sure they will work on it.

I'm curious, is your RTX card not recognized at all with the 399 driver? Possibly Resolve will use it but not to full potential. For instance, my CPU bottlenecks the rendering speed on my GTX1070 to about 25% usage. So even if I had a faster GPU, I couldn't make use of it on my system.

Even worse. I tried it before with older drivers. The system hang or I got no display, even on my Quadro P4000. I had to remove the RTX 2080 TI start the computer, go into the devices reset to last driver on the P4000 and make the unused devices visible and delete the old driver from the RTX 2080 TI. Only then I was able again to insert the card and start the PC.

And with the 411.95 even it intially worked. The Workstation is set to engery saving and goes down to sleep. When it started again the RTX 2080 TI wasn't coming up again. Only the P4000. This didn't happen with the 417.35 or 417.71, the latter one I now have active again.

I solved the issue an other way. I changed the project settings to 29.97 fps and then by this length of video I was able to stay below 65536 frames and export in H.265.

In another thread I read a trick how to change the project setting timeline without redoing all the editing. That's what I have done.

Sorry, for me not.

Rendering with .mov h265 8K = Error Recording failed
Rendering with .mp4 h265 8K = Davinci Resolve crashes
Rendering in h264 runs fine.

I use a Geforce RTX 2070 card with 8GB RAM. Newest Nvidia Driver 418.81. DR 15.2.3.

Can someone confirm if this setting works (RTX 2070, h265, 8K) so i can hunt down the problem anywhere else.

For me, it is fixed in 15.2.3 - Now I'm able to render H265 videos on NVIDIA encoder longer than 65536 frames. Thank you!

But there is another issue - looks like proper HDR signaling is not written properly into H.265 stream. I.e. when outputing HLG or ST2084 video, all text meta-data is written correctly (I see in Media Info correct transfer, primaries and color space characteristics), but HDR mode (both transfer and colorspace) not triggered in players and TVs. Looks like some issue writting proper bits in SEI and SPS VUI sections of h265 stream.
When Deliver H.264 on NVIDIA encoder - HDR bits written correctly and they trigger HDR mode in players and TVs.

That would be my next problem. I need 8K h.265 files for HDR TVs.
Maybe a workaround would be to render h.264 and then convert it with an other app to h.265? But which one retains all metadata/flags?
New Resolve update 15.2.4 came also yesterday.
Please keep me up to date if you can fix the problem.

Nope. My GTX1060M with 6Gb VRAM doesn't have enough of RAM. Error "GPU Memory is full" appears.

May be this will be an option. But as I understand, DaVinci Resolve's h.264 encoders are 8-bit. 8 bit is not good for HDR, better to have 10 bit. Probably you can use DNXHR HQX codec (it has 10 and 12 bit options). Yes, it will have HUGE size, but at for me it is very flexible and most bitrate/quality/speed effective codec.
Then you could try to transcode then with FFMPEG using it's NVENC h.265 codec. Probably you couldn't copy all meta-data (ffmpeg has option to copy this), but you can specify necessary proper meta-data in command line string manually. You can take most of the parameters from MediaInfo log of source files.

For example (targeted to 35 mbit/sec HDR10 10 bit color with NVIDIA hardware encoder):
Code: Select all
ffmpeg -i [input file] -c:v hevc_nvenc -preset slow -profile:v main10 -b:v 35000k -c:a copy  -metadata:s:v:0 master-display="G(13248,34499)B(7500,2999)R(34000,15999)WP(15700,17550)L(10000000,100)" -color_range 1 -color_trc smpte2084 -color_primaries bt2020 -colorspace 9 -pix_fmt yuv420p10le [output file]

There are threads here with more detailed examples of ffmpeg HDR transcoding parameters. Most examples for CPU x265 encoder (good, but very slow), but most of keys and parameters are similar to NVENC h265 encoder (-c:v hevc_nvenc).

Thank you very much!

I will try it with DNxHR as intermediate.

With my first short test DNxHR HQX gave me one bad frame while DNxHR 444 was fine.

Hi! I have run into this issue and have spent the last 2 months trying to get this sorted out. I am able to export an h265 encoded file for 8K HDR 60fps from Resolve in OSX.

When I try to export the same clip in Windows Resolve it never converts to HDR when I go to upload on Youtube.

When looking at the metadata on windows I see that the Nvidia encoder is showing 8Bit when it should be 10bit.
