Camera Projection using results from Camera Tracking?

PostSat Jan 12, 2019 10:53 pm

Hi,
I have a project where I need to replace the view of a window inside a moving camera shot. Basically, combining a Camera Track with Camera Projection onto a Card/Background.

Can anyone point me to such a tutorial or walkthrough?

Thanks in advance.

Any chance you can show us the shot?

There are so many ways to approach this, depending on the way it's shot and the complexity of it.

It's a pretty dark shot. Although the window area and the bed have enough light for a track. My main concern is lining up the Background card with the plane of the window. Am I correct to assume that a Background node would suffice as a projection "card"?

If you don't need parallax in the background, basically yes.

Is there a 3D Projection node like Nuke has? How do I tell Fusion to project onto the card? Also, do I create a duplicate of the camera and delete the animation at a specific frame, like Nuke? Or is there a specific workflow for camera projection in Fusion?

I didn't state my question clearly enough: since I don't know Nuke I don't know how its 3D projection works. So I wasn't sure how to answer 'does Fusion have 3D projection'.

Fusion can quite literally project on a card (comparable to a slide projector ie as a light) but you can also UV camera project where the projecting 'sticks' to the card.

You can project with one camera and then move a second one through the scene 'filming' the projected image.

If you look at my showreeel at www.shadowmaker.nl there's a shot of two people walking across a rope bridge where I projected I think 3 different frames of footage at different points in time on stand-in geometry to completely replace the background so I could paint out their support wires.

So there are quite a lot of ways to go about it, that's why I asked you about your specific footage.
It's client sensitive or NDA of some sort, please feel free to PM me. If it's your own personal work and you can share, please do so we can all learn from it.

It sounds like Fusion works much in the same way as Nuke. Can you point me to a tutorial that shows how to use Fusion in the way you described for your scene? By the way you described the process in Fusion, I think it would work for my project.

I don't know of any tutorials from the top of my head. So to suggest one to you would involve me in doing the same thing you would do: google it or search within Youtube.

I take it from your response that your footage is private? Because if it isn't I could use the footage to create a tutorial for you.

It’s ok for me to share it with you. I can send you a link to download it. All I need is an email I can send it to. I appreciate all your help with this.

There is some fusion camera projection tutorials on the paid site cmivfx i believe. There was also a good uv projection from the old Eyeon days which is probably still up on youtube.

Here is one, though it is from 4 years ago, it should be of some help.

Here is another one using Fusion 9:

Win 10 Home | Intel i7 - 10700f 64 GB 1 TB GB SSD 2 TB SSD
RTX-3060 12 GB | Resolve Studio 18.6.6| Fusion Studio 18.6.6

Just send me a PM/DM and I'll give you my e-mail. I like to avoid sharing it directly on a forum.
