A *really* annoying behaviour

PostThu Jan 17, 2019 1:52 am

Quite often I have multiple video tracks with text overlays on them - vertically stacked so to speak.

It is intensely annoying that if I accidentally drop a title onto a video track where there is already a title, the new title completely obliterates the previous one.

When such a gaffe is noticed straight away it's easy enough to undo the action but if it's not caught until several minutes later it's a real PITA.

I notice that other NLEs will allow multiple titles to be dropped on the same timeline and they all appear, providing the alpha channel is honoured). It would be nice if Resolve did the same -- or at least warned you when you were about to obliterate one title with another.

Are you dropping the titles directly on the track itself or on a track just above? I place all my titles on their own track above the video track on which I want them to appear and have never experienced this problem.

I don't get it either. I routinely stack titles on top of each other. They all display. You might want to provide a screenshot of what's happening.

Just to clarify... I normally use separate video tracks for each of the text elements I want to display simulataneously but sometimes it's easy to drop a new text item on top of a track that already has elements beyond the view window. It is just a management/discipline thing but in other NLEs you can have more than one element on the same video track and overlap them without "damage". Resolve doesn't allow that.

Which NLEs are you referring to? I have never heard of overlapped or stacked title clips on one track in ANY app unless they were nested.

Sony's NLEs allowed this (at least the versions I've used in the past).

I would argue that is how any NLE should work.

I think the best solution here is paying more attention while you work.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

There is no reason why Resolve should copy Vegas here, this is user error nothing more
