Auto audio levels in URSA Mini Pro

PostThu Jan 24, 2019 11:25 am

Hello,

would be a nice feature in some situations (as ENG work) to have an automatic audio level feature in camera that does the work. What do you think?

No, most audio auto level systems, crank up the gain during quite moments, and add gain noise to the sound track, is the formof a hissing sound, or over amplify the background sounds. You are better off with a good limiter circuit in the audio mic preamp. This is why I use a Sound Devices MicPre/D you get a great limiter as well as excellent mic preamps.

@Denny Smith:
I agree that clearly its better to have some external audio recording running. But in some situations I miss this auto level feature that e.g. the FS7 has implemented.

Maybe there is a way to add this option into the menus as an update?

Not likely, as audio ALC is a hardware feature, as are limiters, as well as firmware control. If the hardware doesn’t support an audio feature, firmware will not be able either.
