Blackmagic EVF and Video Assist 4K desqueeze problem

PostFri Feb 15, 2019 2:45 pm

Hello guys
Long story short. I love the blackmagic EVF. It,s the best option for that money PERIOD. But i am having some trouble attaching the EVF to my Sony PMW-F3 camera.

My connection goes like this : Sony outputs a 10bits 422 sdi 1080p signal to the Blackmagic Video Assist 4K recorder and the recorder gets this signal and dispaly it. From the SDI out of the recorder i connect the blackmagic evf which outputs a beautiful image BUT this is where the problem starts. When i try to use the peaking function it display a green overlay image and no peaking ...see images attached on the second comment of the thread
.

My second problem is whit the Video Assist 4k anamorphic desqueze function which is desquezing the image BUT also cropping it and not showing the full image and of course i cannot monitor proper frame.

I am so disspointed and read a lot before purchasing these two and i thought it will work like charm. Any advice guys ? Or i must return the products?

I do not use the camera/VA originated focus assist, the EVF has its own focus assist which is much better. The three buttons on top of the EVF, can be programmed by the EVF firmware. You should bring the EVF FW up to FW 5.X at least.

This will solve the green screen bit. The VA focus assist only works on the VA screen, not on the SDI output from my expeywithnthe VA 5-inch model, the larger 4K is probably the same.

Hello there. So what are you suggesting is to turn off the peaking focus assist on Video assist monitor and upgrade the firmware on the EVF and it will solve my problem ?

Yes, just might. I will run a test using a PixE monitor to double check this for you. But, meanwhile give it a go, costs nothing, easy to do. Just run camera FW 5.1.1 and see if this does not work for you. Download the Ursa Broadcast (Page 118/119 or a Ursa ?Mini Manual to get the EVF Manual info on using the top button which are for:
Button Features
On the top of the viewfinder you’ll find the zoom, display and peak buttons. These buttons are used for zooming into your image, and turning overlays and focus peaking on or off.

Tried everything. Updated the EVF, the monitor Assist 4k....problem still persist. Anamorphic desqueze still not working. blackmagic is not answering to my support ticket...left in the dark with products of 2000 euros. thinking of returning. Too bad , the EVF has massive potential ....

Nit sure if the VA de squeeze is output the SDI? Is the EVF focus assist working now? The EVF firmware does not de squeeze an anamorphic image unless you are using a camera that supports this feature, like the Ursa Mini 4.6/Pro.

Did BM Support assign you a rep on your ticket? If not send another message, it is the weekend, so you will not hear back until Monday. It you have a rep assigned, send that person a message directly.

Hello Denny
1. VA is desquezing but it does not show the full desqueezed image on monitor. It's actually cropped.
2. Same image is output on the EVF
3. EVF has the same problem after update

Blackmagic did gave me a number ticket. You right. It's weekend.

I dont get it...I see people complain about desqueezing here from 2017. Since then the problem persist.
