GH5 V-Log L ACES IDT?

PostSun Nov 04, 2018 9:23 pm

I want to add some GH5 footage to my project but there's no IDT. Does anyone have one or know where I can get one, as the V35 one isn't much use?

(It does seem strange no-one's come up with one in all the time the GH5 has been out...)

Oh and how to install it if it's anything beyond copying it to a directory?

As an update Black Magic say they don't know of one and it's down to Panasonic to produce one. I have asked Panasonic but I can't find one (I looked before my original posting, in fact I spent about two hours looking around the internet and reading forum posts before posting).

The only option for ACES to get decent colors is to convert the GH5 colors to V-Gamut (the gamma is fine), generate an intermediate and use this file with ACES V35.

I believed that color gamut in Gh5 when using vlog-l was rec709,but inspecting a .mov file recently with latest mediainfo ,it is reporting vgamut as the color space.

It may indicate it is but don't think it is V-Gamut at all, interpreting the video as V-Gamut will oversaturate, especially the blues.

FYI Panasonic got back to me:

"I want to let you know that the DC-GH5/GH5S does not support ACES and there are no plans to produce an IDT for it."

Try this :
Media Tab :
1) Create a new projet and import a GH5 VLOG
2) Color Management => ACEScc 1.1 => Set IDT and ODT
3) next adjust size,etc..
ACES_1_1.jpg

4) create a new TL for this clip.
5) Right clic on GH5 source and go to menu => ACES Input Transform => Panasonic V35 (see image)
ACES_1_1_IDT.jpg

:)

Color Tab => adjust LGG and SNR ? if needed...as you like.. :)
Color Tab.jpg

Thank you for all that, I appreciate the effort. I'll go have a play as soon as I get a sec. I think I even have some footage of Regents Street in V-Log L ;-)
(I'll probably use something with people, trees and buildings. Plus a ColorChecker.)

It actually oversaturates the reds and pushes way too much towards magenta.
But these issues can be corrected quite easily.

Did a whole feature film using this kind of hack (GH5 V-Log L + ACES + HUE/HUE, HUE/SAT, HUE/LUM) worked quite well

I have to admit that I'm quite ignorant, what is "LGG" and "SNR", the second one is Signal to Noise Ratio?

P.S.: Sorry for asking after months.

Hello, Sandro :
LGG : Lift, Gamma, Gain
SNR : Spatial Noise Reduction.

Hope this help. :)

V-Log L uses Rec709 gamut - not V-Gamut.
So it's basically fake-log.

You said:
"Did a whole feature film using this kind of hack (GH5 V-Log L + ACES + HUE/HUE, HUE/SAT, HUE/LUM) worked quite well"

But I wasn't clear whether you meant the (more-or-less) exact scheme mentioned by Jean Claude in excellent detail, or something else? (I dodged the issue last time around, due to time pressures, but its come up again and it's time to take it more seriously.)

Basically the first step, yes.
But with newer versions of DR you can use the ACES ofx and create your own ACES workflow and bypass the Rec709 gamut interpreted as V-Gamut which will help preventing oversaturation or even worse gamut clipping issues.

in an ACES project assign the "ACEScct" IDT to your GH5 clips. then on the color page on the very first node apply the resolve color transformFX. set input to v-gamut/v-log and output to ACES AP1 / ACEScct. Activate/adjust luminance and gamut mapping (optional since both is scene referred). Do your grading after this first color transformFX node. That should do the trick.

So what happens if you apply the V35 idt or a lut made for real V-Gamut?
I can tell you:
[*] reds turn dark and are oversaturated, they turn magenta as well
[*] blues are too dark and almost oversaturated as well
[*] skintones have way too much red
[*] the rolloff is nothing but bad (reds clip and turn yellow)

Whatever gamut it is, it's not V-Gamut.

I agree, both the Panasonic LUT and the V35 input transform are not correct for GH5(s) cameras.

I would recommend using HLG, colors are much better matching.

However, ACES does not support HLG input (there is an HLG transform in ACES 1.1 but it is not suitable as a camera input transform).

Hello,
From what I understood: with GH5: 12 Fstop, Varicam 15 Fstop.
As a result: beyond 80 IRE: the GH5 lost all the potential of VLOG.

VS
varicam.jpg

(From what I understood...)
Edit :
And for v-Gamut : from Panasonic white paper :

could the sat/clip be related to camera settings perhaps?

I was advised by a Panasonic Technical Specialist that the color gamut of V-Log L is Rec.2020

I've asked for clarification if the Rec.2020 Gamut is then mapped to the larger V-Gamut for compatibility purposes (which I suspect is the case).

The V-Log to V709 (aka Cinelike, not pure Rec.709) Transform LUTs that Panasonic provide for GH4, GH5 and Varicam are all exactly the same.

Further update on this. Had clarification from Panasonic that the V-Log L gamut on GH5 & GH5s is in fact V-Gamut, not Rec.709 as some have been claiming on other forums.

The V35 / V-Log IDTs will therefore work

No V-Log mode does not allow any adjustments except for sharpness and noise reduction.

By the way HLG is possible in ACES if you use DCTLs. You must clip negative code values as the GH5 allows the noise level to go below zero which is desastrous for ACES under Resolve as it does not clip those values.

To make it work under ACES clamp the negative code values to zero before calling: InvRRTODT_Rec2020_1000nits_15nits_HLG() as the ODT.

So I'm trying to write up using ACES with Panasonic GH5 VLog-L clips as a simple set of instructions. The smart money says I've missed things out and made errors. Could people please make any additions/corrections they feel useful and suggest and other ways to do things that they think are worthwhile.
(BTW several of the Photos in this thread don't appear to me, some do but some don't, which added a complication.)

Anyway I just wrote this...

File (on top menu) -> Project Settings
- Color Science to ACEScct (unless you have a preference for ACEScc)
- ACES version to 1.1
- Aces Input Device Transform to ACEScct (adds a "toe" to ACEScc to make it look more film-like)
- Aces Output Device Transform to Rec 709
In the Media Pool...
Right mouse Button (RMB) on VLog-L clips you will use and select ACES input transform to "Panasonic V35"
Add media files to the timeline.
In Color...
Color (on top menu) -> Nodes -> Add Serial Node
Click on OpenFX to open the menu
Drag "Color Space Transform" onto the node
In the Color Space Transform box:
- Select input Color Space to Panasonic V-Gamut
- Select input Gamma to Panasonic V-Log
- Select output Color Space to ACES AP1
- Select output Gamma to ACEScct
Add any additional nodes you want after this one.

Thanks for any help!

I think that's overly complicated. Here's how I do it.

- Aces Output Device Transform to Rec. 2020 ST2084 (1000 nits)

V-Log-L is simply not V-Gamut, it is very easy to see that.

The new Panasonic S1 and S1H cameras are supposed to have a correct V-Gamut in their V-Log modes although I have not verified that myself.

Correct.
Especially now that the S1H has the blue channel issue fixed V-Log footage from this camera works flawlessly with the V35 IDT which expects Rec2020 variables, while V-Log L is Rec709 based.

Re: GH5 V-Log L ACES IDT?

Jon Leslie wrote:So I'm trying to write up using ACES with Panasonic GH5 VLog-L clips as a simple set of instructions.

Try these 2 simple ways at first if it suits you.

I only installed the 16 release this morning, so I'm having a little culture shock in places... I don't use the Betas as they usually don't like my system and it's just too high risk. Anyway working out where I think your dialogs came from can I describe your approaches thus (plus the LUT approach):

(1) ACES
File (on top menu) -> Project Settings
- Color Science to ACEScct (adds a "toe" to ACEScc to make it look more film-like)
- ACES version to 1.1
- Aces Input Device Transform to No Transform
- Aces Output Device Transform to Rec 709
In the Media Pool...
Right mouse Button (RMB) on VLog-L clips you will use and select ACES input transform to "Panasonic V35"
Add media files to the timeline.

Which seems to get the Reds of the London Busses wrong to me, but is the quite similar to just using the Panasonic VLog LUT but with bonus added contrast (curiously the test footage I have been using is looking towards Regent Street from Piccadilly Circus... small World). Oh and I do have a colour-calibrated monitor.

(2) Colour conversion
File (on top menu) -> Project Settings
- Color Science to "DaVinci YRGB"
- Timeline Colour Space to "Rec.709 Gamma 2.4" (for TV/Cinema somewhere dark-ish, presumably 2.2 for viewing on a computer)
Add media files to the timeline.
In Color...
Select Nodes at top right if you can't see the Nodes box
Color (on top menu) -> Nodes -> Add Serial Node
Click on OpenFX to open the menu
Drag "Color Space Transform" onto the node
In the Color Space Transform box:
- Select input Color Space to "Panasonic V-Gamut"
- Select input Gamma to "Panasonic V-Log"
- Select output Color Space to "Rec. 709"
- Select output Gamma to "Gamma 2.4"
Add any additional nodes you want after this one.

(3) LUT
(I think the Panasonic V-Log LUT is included with Resolve 16? If not you'll need one, e.g. from:
https://pro-av.panasonic.net/en//varica ... V35_EN.zip where you'd want the .cube file.)
File (on top menu) -> Project Settings
- Color Science to "DaVinci YRGB"

Color (on top menu) -> Nodes -> Add Serial Node
Right mouse Button (RMB) on the node and select LUTs -> "3D LUT" -> Panasonic -> "V-Log to V-709"

Oh, no Red Busses for the examples, went for something a bit better known...

You only have to post a link to one of your source clips so that we can download it and test it: we'll see what we can draw :?:

First of all, I don't understand the rationale for all the acrobatics proposed here. There are two simple ways to normalize GH5 footage, assuming that panny vlog to rec. 709 is actually appropriate for GH5 footage:

1) RCM or ACEs. Set the input and set the output, and that's it.

2) Resolve yrgb. Put the vlog to rec. 709 LUT on a downstream node, make basic adjustment prior to that node.

In the #2 sample above, it looks like the transform in the first node clipped the highlights.

The differences achieved with these more complicated procedures are so trivial, even when they work, what's the point? You can achieve the same with basic grading techniques, using the standard procedures.

It's got a bit complicated along the way. I really just wanted to use GH5 VLog-L footage in an ACES workflow (with other footage, although this was some time ago now). However that caused much discussion (above) about things like the Gamut and how well it would work. Now I'm just trying to do a Cook-Book approach to people's suggestions (as I want to pass one on to someone), plus test them a little (and Cook-Book the alternatives to avoid people having finger-trouble when making comparisons).

You ask for an opinion: it's up to you to make available what you need if you want help: otherwise go your way: I do not have time to play the riddles!

Just a small difference:
You want to refer to X-Rite ColorCheck Video passport: :?: Are you sure you want to use it properly?

Re: GH5 V-Log L ACES IDT?

PostFri Sep 27, 2019 8:20 pm

I got a little bit lost in all that, if I upset anyone I'm sorry. However all I was doing was trying to document people's suggestions, some of which were quite brief, so they could be followed easily, not invent anything myself. Hence avoiding issues where people don't do things quite the same way and talk at cross-purposes. I still don't think the ACES one looks quite right and the point of ACES is to easily mix a bunch of sources seamlessly (-ish).

As to the ColorChecker video I just picked it as the one with the Busses was long and that was short, plus people know what the colours should look like there, unlike a London Bus. If I was using it to grade I'd probably use the Vector Scope quite a bit, but I'm not, I'm just using it as a source of some colours people should know and as a short VLog-L clip I could find easily.

Anyway, I don't think I got anywhere in all that and certainly don't want to annoy people, so I'll leave it until someone has any other ACES suggestions for VLog-L. I really found some very interesting comments in the topic, especially on gamuts and am glad I asked the question. Some things, like using the ACES OFX I'm not sure I have correct, from:
"In an ACES project assign the "ACEScct" IDT to your GH5 clips. then on the color page on the very first node apply the resolve color transformFX. set input to v-gamut/v-log and output to ACES AP1 / ACEScct."
So I assumed:
File (on top menu) -> Project Settings
- ACES version to 1.1
- Aces Input Device Transform to Acescct (which threw me initially as it's right down the bottom)
- Aces Output Device Transform to Rec 709
Add media files to the timeline.
(- Note we won't be applying an Input Transform to them.)
In Color...
Select Nodes at top right if you can't see the Nodes box
Color (on top menu) -> Nodes -> Add Serial Node
Click on OpenFX to open the menu
Drag "ACES Transform" onto the node
In the ACES Transform box:
- ACES Version to "AXES 1.1"
- Input Transform to "Panasonic V35"
- Output Transform to "ACES"
Repeat for each clip on the Timeline, adjusting Input Transform to suit.

Maybe? I quite like the Reds... but it's quite dark.

(Edit) To clarify my position - the thread started with an interesting discussion on whether the Panasonic V35 IDT could be used with the GH5 or not, or could be used with tweaks. I also discovered Panasonic would not support the GH5 directly with ACES (which somewhat suggests it's different to the Varicam). There has also been some interesting comments on different ways to do things in Resolve, some of which has strayed away from Aces but have still been worthwhile. But I'm still not quite convinced by the ACES routes I've tried (which all give a different result) and am trying to work out what people have used in anger and feel combines well with other cameras. Oh and thanks to everyone for their contributions.

Yes, a color checker is good but you have to match (here quickly done in a basic project YRGB REC.709 Gamma 2.4 => without ACES)
