Where's the Serial Number in Resolve?

PostSun Jan 20, 2019 10:15 pm

I think I threw out the DaVinci Resolve packaging sleeve that had my serial number. Is there anyway to see it in DaVinci Resolve somehow? It doesn't show up in the about window and I'm afraid to hit the de-authorize button because I'm not sure what my serial number is anymore.

If you are using a Resolve activation code, that would have some on a printed card with the Resolve package you bought. If you've lost that card and don't have that number recorded somewhere, there is not a way to retrieve it.

This seems to be an unorthodox concept?

No other software I've purchased behaves in this manner. Usually the serial would be displayed in the About window or Preferences. Or else it is registered with customer support when the software is first initialized.

So if I unauthorize this install I've basically thrown away my license and need to re-purchase?

Really? I haven't seen any software that would display the activation code just like that. It would be a risk for companies to install that software. Any employee or freelancer could just open the software, display the activation code, write it down, and then activate that license at home on their own computer.

Note that it says to keep this card, and that lost cards or activation keys cannot be replaced.

Argh ****, same thing happened to me.

Surely this has to be a support issue for BMD, can't I just show proof of purchase to get a new serial?

When I download an upgrade I think the serial shows up on the top right hand of the form that you fill out. Of course, you needed to have installed and activated it. I'm not at my resolve computer at the moment.

After reading this page I have to make a comment... I'm surprised by their activation and registration process. Weird. I suspect it's for their reseller process.

I just purchased the Studio version today. To my surprise, I find that the reseller has to send me, by snail mail, my activation code. I can't even use the Studio version till I get my serial code.

I find this registration process rather archaic, to say the least, for such an amazing, ahead of its time video editing software. I had to install the Free version to continue learning the software, but I still love the software. LOL

Really surprised me and after reading this thread, I will keep copies of my serial number in my DB app. i.e. B-Folders.

Take care...

very strange indeed.

why can't bm simply register the number to your name as do adobe (well they did anyway), vegas, etc.,

if i 'lose' either of them i simply log into my account and there they are... surely it's not that difficult?

There are retailers out there who will agree to grab a photo of your serial number and email it to the buyer the moment the payment goes through, and then they ship the actual packaging and physical serial number card to you. Find a dealer who will do that for you.

Too late... The retailer has already shipped the card. No big deal, I am still learning the ropes and really do not need the paid version yet. I just wanted to support the company by buying this amazing application. If we don't support them, they can't continue to deliver such a great product or stay in business. Gotta support your local Sherriff you know. Grin

Besides, I deplore the pay as you go model of software rental such as Adobe. They're getting too bloated. I'll support companies such as BM instead. :D

I don't know how long Private Messsages are stored in your profile, but why not send a Private Message to yourself with the registration code? This way, you will have a copy of your registration code stored in your Private Message area of your account on this board..

I just want to add.. this is ridiculous that we sign up, register to download, and yet there is no way to log in and get this info. What is the purpose of registering to download if it offers no way to retrieve the info?

That said, I just had this scare.. I did NOT update to DR 16 Beta 2, started DR and it was inactivated some how and asked me for my activation key. It worked fine last night, and for the past many weeks, so not sure why I had to enter this again. Maybe it goes out from time to time to validate the key after you enter it once.. or requires you to re-enter it every so often?

So.. the BEST way to solve this, is to get yourself a free Last Pass account. It works in browsers on all platforms as an extension, or a web site, as well as there is a mobile app. It isnt just for passwords. You can store secure notes, etc. I put a bunch of notes for things like exactly this info. So if you dont already use Last Pass, you should be or something similar.. saved my butt many times now, and it is just so much faster/easier for sites. Anyway, the purpose in this case is to create a secure note, put in your DR activation key AND the serial number, and save it. You can then access it anytime anywhere.

But really, BlackMagic should have a way to log in to the site, obtain your product registrations, etc. It is 2019, this stuff is easy to implement.

Easy maybe, but tell that to Adobe which leaked my and 152 million other accounts with easily decrypted passwords.

European privacy law GDPR also makes it kind of a chore nowadays. Since BMD only sells through retailers I prefer they concentrate on their products rather than web services anyway.

Last Pass is nice, I use 1Password.

How do I get the serial number if I bought Resolve Studio from Apple's App Store? I imagine the Order ID and Document Number that is on the receipt is for apple's DB.

The App Store Version is linked to your App Store account, no serial needed. But it’s severely limited.
For those who are afraid that some freelance or intern might use your key, don’t worry! If you input it again it will be cancelled for them, wherever they are.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

I wont speak for BMD, but my guess is that they would like to get rid of the dongle. But the dongle is a vestige of the original, cross platform version of Resolve, which used to cost $995 (and the Linux version, which was $19,995).

Many dongle users have been long time Resolve users in large post-production facilities (e.g. CO3), from before it was just an "software editing program". I purchased my dongle in 2011, and have been using it ever day ever since then. I actually like the flexibility that a dongle gives you, in that you are not dependent on internet activation, and you cant forget to deactivate licenses when you move to a new machine, or if a machine dies on you.

I dont know of any other developer that allows you to use both a dongle license AND a software only activation at the same time. I really appreciate that, because it allows me to have Resolve activated on 3 machines, if/when I need to use them (this has been a godsend for when I have to work from home)

I agree... I like the dongle... it means I can edit on a machine that isn't always connected to the Net and also means that if there's a global apocalypse that takes down the interwebs, I'll be the only one who is able to edit and grade footage of the resulting chaos! :-)

But seriously -- I love the fact that we have a choice.

different companies have different processes.

I bought Resolve from a local vendor here in Thailand. I paid for it and he immediately sent a photo of the activation serial number and then posted it to me.
I've copied the photo locally and to my Drobo, Dropbox, Google Drive and as an attachment in my password manager (with all my other app serial numbers).

Though I'm sure the Resolve serial number issue can be improved, we also have a responsibility to safeguard our own purchases.

In case anyone is reading this thread in 2021, if you call Blackmagic, they will open a ticket and you can send them:
1. A PDF of your invoice
2. A picture of the serial number on your camera

Then they will send you the license. I'm sure the DR card that came with my camera is in my house in a "safe place". I'm impressed with BM's customer support so far. This thread is misleading in parts.

You can do the same with the activation key. Online access is only neccessary during first activation - after that you don't need the connection anymore. I myself hate dongles and everything else that is sitting in my USB ports. The activation code is the only way to work on two fully activated systems at the same time without moving a USB device.

Apart from that - I immediately put the serial number and activation code in my password manager, so I never have to worry about it anymore. If a dongle has a malfunction I'm screwed - with the activation key I can always re-activate in minutes.

Not quite true. It doesn't need to be online all the time, but it does need to "phone home" once in a while. How else would they enforce the activation count limits?

The fact that in some environments even this much would be unacceptable due to security restrictions means that the dongle will always be a requirement for some users.

Of course, but the count limit is only checked during a new activation. If you don't do that then the software does not need any online access. What I said is still valid - you need to be online only when you (re-)activate. After that you can work offline as long as you want.

Of course there will always be special installations where a machine can not have any network connection at all to the outside world - then the dongle is the only option, I agree.

What?

I have DR 17 installed. I bought it last year. All is well.
But I didn't keep the card. That's ridiculous.

Are you saying you don't have software registration at your company?
That makes no sense whatsoever.

We can't be expected to buy a new studio version every time we buy a new computer.

There must be some mistake.

I installed the Studio 18 Beta yesterday, and clicking on registration, the dropdown pre-filled with my activation code, and I wrote it down. What this means is: Blackmagic Design does store my registration when I register my product, right? If so, the company should provide a way for us to retrieve this information.

I'm assuming if I'd been on a new machine, the code would not have been found. If I had been installing 18 on a new PC, I'm thinking the pre-population of the key on registration would not have happened. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi

We don't track user information for licensing, ownership or other purposes. We've advised in the past that the dongle and activation cards be treated like cash.

When moving to a new system, you're encouraged to deactivate the studio license from the help menu and activate on the new system. See FAQs here.

Yes, this is why it says, right above the license key on the card:

How do I know this? Because I scanned my card and keep it safe in a folder on my computer that is regularly backed up.

Not only is my card in a safe place so I know where it is, I also have copies of the code as well.
C'mon people, read what's on the card.

I put my activation codes (not only Resolve) into my password safe (Keepass), I make backups and it is encrypted and safe. That encrypted password database is even synced between all my computers and gadgets via my own cloud. Very simple, safe and flexible.

Re: Where's the Serial Number in Resolve?

PostSun Aug 14, 2022 12:40 am

Just found this thread. I have no question that merits any response. Just a suggestion. (I have my activations near).

So I'm moving towards an OS Update (from Catalina) in prep to for the minimum system requirements of DR18, the camera software updates (still on 7.3) and the ATEM software. In the process (and because operating system updates give me an unusual level of anxiety), I've just spent half a week in research, prep, reading, and various discussions. I finally tested and confirmed a bootable backup with the current OS, and when I did.....

Resolve asked for my Activation Key too as soon as I tried to load it on the bootable SSD. Anyhow, I'm moving towards a clean/fresh install of macOS so this was helpful to realize, because I had not thought about it ahead of time. Loaded up my other software and serial numbers were easy to find in the "About" section.

In any event, switched the startup disk back to the internal drive and located the Key/Card in my safe-spot.

Currently looking at this card and I do see the notice ("Lost cards or activation keys cannot be replaced") but I certainly didn't read/see that a year ago. For whatever it's worth, the white text blends in (especially in the smaller font below the "Product Activation Key" header). It might have been noticed if that disclaimer had been printed in yellow-bold (like the header), or even attached to the header (i.e. "This Product Activation Key Cannot Be Replaced").

Hopefully I'm not speaking out of turn or offering an unsolicited opinion. That is not my intention at all. I glanced through the thread but didn't read every post. Sounds like things are working out okay but just a thought

Ok, is there a limited number of activations on each serial, or unlimited?
If not unlimited, is there somewhere i can check how many it is left with the serial number on my activation card?

no, you can't check and there are only 2 installations
if you install a 3rd system, one of the previews installation will fail.

You get unlimited installations, but only 2 activated systems at a time.

If you have 2 active activations, and you activate a third system, the 2 current systems will be de-activated, and the activation count starts over, with the one you just activated being the first of your 2 activations.

You can only utilize this start over scheme a limited amount in a given time frame. It's not intended to allow mass usage. If you use it too much, it will time out for a week.

So whenever possible, if you plan to move an activation from one system to another, you should de-activate the license in the system you are moving it from, using the Resolve Help menu: Deactivate License.

If you use the start over scheme too often, and you get the message that the reactivation is timed out for a week, there is nothing we can do about that. You'll have to wait for a week, manually deactivate a license on one of your systems, or get another license.

I can't speak for Blackmagic, but the last time I asked about that 6-7 years ago, I think they told me I could send in the broken one to service, and they'd make a judgement as to whether it could be repaired, and if not there'd be a charge for a replacement. I don't think the cost was huge -- it was much less than a new dongle. But I don't know the current policy.

AFAIK, you'd send back the damaged dongle and give them the serial number from your original invoice and they'll replace it. They'd just check if it's not a counterfeit one.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

It's a major PITA, and now I'm really polite.

I have both computers on my desk. One is active and can start - but that's not the one, I want to use this time around. In order to check, if the version is up-to-date (I'm updating OS etc), I need to start the critter, but that needs a serial number.

The problem child, probably, had the Resolve Studio activation disabled some time ago (or the OS update has "affected something" - who knows).

No way to see a license code on the activated machine (who's the st... ahem steward for that?).

Sigh. Now I've had to remotely boot my NAS "halfway across the world" (at least felt that way, since the bother is the same, even if it had been just around the corner), just to get access to the code.

Sigh

I have all my need serial numbers/passwords in a printed form in a fire proof safe (also that is where my original card is. I used to be a partner in a large Unix based firm and developed our software recovery plan.

1. Read everything twice
2. store in several locations, one off site (a very secure online site will work)
3. Have a full backup of your boot drive (fire proof safe if on premises)
4. Don't blame others if you fail to read/protect the information you will need to operate your system.

It's obvious that in this case the fault lies not with the system of the manufacture but with the person who fails to implement/follow procedures.

Don't install anything -software or hardware- until you are rested and sure of every step. Even though I am retired I still follow my system I developed for my firm (which had over 100 large buses and 300+ employees). The day our system crashed, all I had to do was use the nightly back to start our backup computer and we were functioning. Treat your small business the same way because the day will come when your attention to detail and backup system will work - it may even save your business. Remember it is your responsibility to run your business and no one else.
