Every time this topic gets bumped up my hopes rise only to be dashed...
Seriously how hard can it be just to say "no" and put a stop to all the endless speculation?

“No! I won’t stop!” Haha. See it’s easy to say no. Haha.

I’m on the hope train. However, if I was to get a G2 and not sell the 4.6K then I would want to be able to easily match them with the same RAW codec and color science. So it does need to happen.

Absolutely needs to happen. Very hard to plan future purchases without a clear idea of backward and forward compatibility.

We’ll get that 4.6k update. Also BM mentioned in an earlier thread that the sensor compiling was completed for the 4.6k. This camera is next up to get the update so I have a feeling that’s what they’re working on right now or finishing up as we speak. Also as Tim mentioned above about matching the pro and 4.6k cameras is something I want as well. I shot a short recently where I used my URSA mini 4.6K and my pro 4.6k. I used the Helios and the Mir 1-V anamorfake lenses. For some reason BRAW looked beautiful to me after correcting in resolve. The Cdng was a bit harsher especially when chromatic aberration was in play due to the lens characteristics. Braw option to rolled off highlights was indeed a much needed option. So yes I can’t wait!

That would be a dream, just a statement one way or the other would be nice. Seems like the patent issue may speed up whatever they have in mind.

Blackmagic RAW on the Ursa Mini 4.6k?

PostMon Apr 01, 2019 2:51 am

BlackmagicRAW Player 1.3 and SDK for 1.3 just came out. So this week will see BRAW 1.3 come to all cameras that currently support BRAW. With luck the UM4.6K support is added as well.

Awhile ago I estimated BRAW on the 4.6K around the end of March (bad estimate) or at NAB 2019. If it doesn’t show there, there’s still IBC 2019. If it doesn’t show then, it’s likely not going to coincide with any media media and industry gathering. Just quietly appear one day.

So do you reckon now because of the CinemaDNG issues, we'll be more likely to see BRAW on the Ursa mini 4.6k?

If Blackmagic is truly trying to leave CinemaDNG behind then it is a safe bet that the URSA Mini 4.6K will get BRAW since they are still selling UM4.6K cameras. That's my 2¢.

My fingers are crossed for this week. Next week all the news will be NAB news, so it's not likely it will happen then. If anything the main focus will be on Resolve 16 and any other new products announced. So hoping this week it finally happens.

Personally I don't think it will arrive before NAB or even before the next big media convention, as I feel BM won't want to distract from promoting there latest products. That's if it ever arrives at all, Sorry but I'm now not very optimistic for BRaw on the UM.4.6k.

I'd love to get BRAW on the UM4.6K... but this footage Note Suwanchote just shared really sells me on the G2 because that color science looks great. The faster rolling shutter is also really nice.

Don’t worry Tim we’ll get it. It’s the next camera in line for the update. Would love to see it get updated by the BM reveal at NAB. And yes that Footage/test from Note looks really really good!

Okay, now that I finally got my Avengers: Endgame tickets after the AMC app & website crashed today I feel confident we'll get BRAW on the UM4.6K. And, the AMC app is still not loading properly on my phone. So, if the impossible task of getting a ticket happened today, then the impossible task of getting BRAW on the UM4.6K will happen. That's how I look at it.

Okay, I was partially right. Firmware 6.3 brought support for the UMPG2 with BRAW 1.3. So, hopefully FW 6.4 still is support for BRAW on the UM4.6K. However, it might end up being BRAW 1.3 support for the UMPG1 and Pocket 4K with FW 6.5 being the UM4.6K. Maybe if we're lucky BRAW comes to the UM4.6K in 6.4 along with the support of BRAW 1.3 in the UMPG1 and Pocket 4K.

6.3.update, nothing surprising here.
BRaw for the Ursa mini 4.6k looks even less likely. I was negative, but I'm even more so now. Nothing would be better than I'm proved wrong on this one.

In defense of Blackmagic Design this Firmware Update was to be expected. I'm not surprised at all that the G2 was the only camera effected by the update. I previously predicted that BRAW 1.3 would also come to the G1 and Pocket 4K in the same update, but have been proven wrong. No worries there as BRAW 1.3 will come. The big thing with BRAW 1.3 is the Embedded 3D LUTs feature. From the new manual:
Screen Shot 2019-04-05 at 2.37.27 AM.png
Embedded 3D LUTs
Screen Shot 2019-04-05 at 2.37.27 AM.png (225.67 KiB) Viewed 4754 times

Now, as you can see it currently says G2 only for this and that's because it's a feature they are introducing with the G2. I'm positive that it can happen with the G1 and Pocket 4K. Thus it will come down the line when those cameras get BRAW 1.3.

I still believe the UM4.6K will get BRAW, especially when looking through the new manual and finding the UM4.6K still in there. Not only that but it has dashes where BRAW is concerned for the codecs, but no CinemaDNG is mentioned anymore. Thus, they are definitely working on bringing BRAW to the UM4.6K and will likely get it in there in a future update. The manual is prepared and all that's needed is a few updates here and there for the manual.

Good reasoning. But as I've said before. Personally I think this update for the Ursa mini 4.6k is waaaaaay down on BM's to do list. ( That's if it ever arrives) so late late Summer if that.
Lastly there are cut off points for FirmWare updates for products and this could be it in regards to the Ursa mini 4.6k.

That is a strange omission when we know URSA Mini 4.6K v4.8 offers CinemaDNG. I still think it’s coming.

FW 6.3 formthe new Ursa Mini Pro 2 is not surprise, it is not adding BRaw to the camera, but is the normal base FW release for the new camera, adding some tweaks. Every time a new camera is released, a base “adding support” FW update for that camera is released. This has nothing to do with updating the UM 4.6 to add BRaw. However, now that this required base FW is out, the team has time to now work on the UM 4.6 update, so it should be out next.

I wonder if there is no one who is able to emulate a firmware and crack it for ursa mini 4.6k and post it as a torrent. It's obvious that the PRO and the non-pro are almost the same in terms of chip, so the braw may also work. I live far away and bought the camera not a long time ago. Blackmagic taking care of bussines and forgetting about recent buyers, they are gaining bad reputation. Sorry for my english, I'm from a spanish language country.

Well...gotta say I was disappointed by the NAB presentation. Thought we would hear more about the cameras themselves, but still exciting to see Resolve growing out. Course I would have loved to hear about the BRAW path for this camera most.

Why? I wasn't disappointed at all. I'm loving Resolve 16 Beta so far.

I understand why there was no camera news. They had their big news a month ago with the G2 announcement. It's now shipping, so no need to provide any further updates. Plus, they added a battery grip to the Pocket 4K. So they covered what they needed to camera wise. The main focus was on Broadcast equipment and Resolve 16.

I'm positive BRAW is still in the works for the UM4.6K and that we'll find out something when Blackmagic has something to say. Now, I still want it greatly on the UM4.6K because it would be very useful to stop using ProRes. And, I want to be able to give feedback on it. Positive feedback... because there's too much negativity in the world.

Now, I'm going to get back to playing with Resolve 16. I want to see if I can remove this woman from this shot... sadly I don't think it's easy since she's out of focus and the software can't quite get rid of her easily without it looking obvious. Still, it is a Beta so maybe it will improve.

A 2 camera shoot with a UMP4.6 and UM4.6 manufactured only months apart but with the same sensor, and they have different color sciences and recording format settings, is frustrating.

Just give the UM4.6 the Color science 4 firmware and BRAW update and be done with that camera. That's all UM4.6 users want.

Considering BM current workload. And the relative low priority of The Ursa Mini 4.6k within the scheme of things .

My guess is if it comes, it may arrive at the end of summer 2019.
Personally I don't think it will ever arrive.

Considering the number of people who own UM4.6k cameras they should bump it up the priority list.

I hardly think they’re paying attention to these forums especially this thread, write into customer support and inquire more often if it’s really something we want.

You work for BMD and know their development schedule? WOW. Why didn't you say so?

Or maybe they'd prefer to get it "right" rather than "right now"?

Unless you buy a used UM Pro and one of the leftover new stock UM Pros, you are only going to be able to get the UMP G2, BMD stopped producing the UM Pro, replaced it with the G2. ;)
