Scopes on a Mac Air with BMDCC Raw?

PostThu Sep 13, 2012 2:41 am

I'm one of the many people anxiously awaiting the release of the highly-anticipated Black Magic Design Cinema Camera.

Just wondering...does a Mac Air laptop have enough oomph to handle "Scopes" when shooting with the BMDCC in raw mode (or even ProRes)? I see on the site that a Macbook Pro is shown...just hoping I can use what I have.

Thanks!

Unfortunately it does not. The MacBook Airs have the Intel HD 4000 graphics chips in them and they are not accelerated enough for using Ultrascope.

MacBook Air is ultra energy efficient and so is the Intel graphics controller, but it just doesn't put up the numbers in processing power.

Bummer...but thanks for the answer, Joshua. Looks like I'll be upgrading my laptop.

Please confirm if Ultrascope will work with latest MacMini with Intel HD 3000 512mb plus 16gig Ram. Currently building rig for BMCC and MacMini fits nicely with monitor/teleprompter/raid etc.

Joshua, you mentioned that the Air with HD4000 graphics can't handle the Pocket Ultrascope display. I assume the new Mini (6.2) is also not able to handle it? It uses the same graphics chipset as the Air.

I've not tried it but I would assume that's the case yes.

Hi Josh,

Would it be possible to use a Graphics Expansion Module with the Mac Air to help boost the graphics capability and be able to use Ultrascope that's included with the BMCC?

Also, which Mac laptop has the minimum requirement to run just a 2 up set up?

Thanks,
Joe

You could try ScopeBox on a Macbook air with the Ultrastudio mini Recorder
