Hyperdeck Studio Mini 128GB SD cards for HD recording?

PostTue May 07, 2019 8:52 pm

Hi,

Has anybody successfully used the 128GB Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-I (95Mb/s) cards for HD recording (1080/30P) on their Hyperdeck Studio Mini? We will be doing ProRes 422LT and/or H.264.

The recommended cards list on the BlackMagic site only shows 32 and 64GB cards for HD recording, then skips to the 4K recording section before listing any 128GB cards and they are UHS-II.

Thanks,

Mike

Not sure about the 128 GB cards, but I have used the 512 GB Extreme Pro UHS-I cards to record 1080p60 video fairly extensively. They work great whether recording in ProRes LT or H.264.

I would guess the 128 GB versions would probably be fine as well, especially since 1080p30 would be half the data rate when recording ProRes.

We're using 128GB SanDisk Extreme pro 95MB/S and have had no issues.

Use the SanDisk 128GB cards all the time with no problems. Record usually 5 hours at a go across two cards in HD ProRes 422 LT.

Hey - I do know the reason for this. I had a lot of back and forth with the fine folks at BMD about this a few months back (I even sent over an SD card for testing).

I was having lots of dropped frame issues with the 128GB cards that you mentioned - Specifically SanDisk. At this point, they were on the recommended list.

Then after an investigation by the BMD team, we found that certain 128 cards were not working properly.

I've been successfully using the 64GB version of the same card with no issues so it appeared to be a specific issue that SanDisk implemented in their 128GB cards.

So with all that said - I would avoid the 128GB cards until some sort of fix is posted (if that ever even happens). Others may have successfully used those cards - and maybe they will work just fine for you too. But in my experience, there were lots of dropped frames over time which meant for unusable portions of my recordings.

Been using Sandisk 512GB cards for over a year with no issues. YMMV.

Best,
