Drive the XDR Display w/ old kit?

PostWed Jun 05, 2019 3:51 pm

Is it possible to use my 2xD700s to drive the new XDR display from Apple?
To the best of my knowledge, there is no upgrade available for me beyond the 2xD700s. I may be able to trade my DM240 and get the XDR, but I can't upgrade MP and display simultaneously.
Thank you,
Jay

You could send the Mini Monitor signal into the new Teranex Mini model. I think you'd probably be better served buying a new computer than a new monitor if you already have a DM240, but that's just me.

Thanks Jack.
I assume you mean the Mini SDI to Displayport 8K device.
Would my 2xAMD700s be sufficient to run the Apple monitor?
I agree, I am better off buying a new computer all things told, but am at a crossroads WRT switching to a dedicated PC for DR work vice paying at least 15K for a new Mac Pro.
The XDR monitor offers up the possibility of HDR projects, which are beyond my reach w/ the DM240 though it is an excellent monitor.

I am a fan of PC, since the performance per dollar tends to be much higher. AMD's new 7nm CPUs and GPUs will be available before too long this year, and NVidia will probably refresh their GPUs to compete. If you can wait a bit, buying after that release would be a good time. Carsten Sellberg and Misha Engel have posted a lot of information about this on the Resolve subforum here.

I have a feeling the D700s will crash and burn trying to do high resolution HDR projects.

I am very skeptical that the Apple XDR will hit all the specs claimed, particularly in equalling or surpassing the performance of a $35,000 Sony BVM-X300/310 grading display. I would love to be wrong.

I think it's gonna be tough to give away a Trashcan Mac by the end of this year. Granted, the 2019 Mac Pros are ridiculously expensive, but not many people can say they're underpowered or incapable of doing very fast post work with 4K, 6K, and 8K files (assuming fast GPUs and the Afterburner). For certain kinds of work, I think the new Mac Pros will be well-received.

If you price similar workstations from HP or Supermicro, they're actually not that far off in cost, particularly if you factor in the CPU, power supply, number of slots, GPUs, RAM, and so on. But I think trying to get a 2019 6K display to run off a 2013 Mac Pro will be problematic, particularly if the new monitor expects a Thunderbolt 3 connection (which the Trashcan does not have).

I doubt abut it, but such a thing is possible in theory as BVM-X300 is getting already old.
New model is HX310 and it's very different monitor than X300 (LCD not OLED). Sony markets it as new reference model and this is current technology (and probably best what is on the market now). As far as I understand it's the same Panasonic panel as used in Flanders/EIZO (although I can be wrong as Sony is also working on per pixel backlit panels).

If Apple monitor will be typical Apple approach (with not settings etc.) then it's not going to be "very studio" friendly. It may have good panel though.

When BM will enable full screen preview on 2nd display then you will be able to run this monitor from any DP 1.3/4 equipped GPU.

Apparently HX310 uses Sony's panel, but viewing angles are not great.
update: it's not. It's most likely same Panasonic panel as others use.

Atomos HDR

PostThu Jun 20, 2019 5:24 pm

Thanks, understood. Leaning toward new MP to drive the train.
Can the new Atomos HDR monitors carry water or do you believe their claims are optimistic as well?

It would be nice. We will have to see how well it performs in testing.

given the track record of Atmos to date, i'd not be holding me breath,

but this is the spec's i would find about ideal, they are claiming to be delivering.. if i was to hook my wagon to a dream, this is a better dream:

55" / 4096x2160 / 100% DCI-P3 / D65 / 1000nit / HLG & PQ

yea....

they are setting a pretty high bar there.....

At this size it's hard to deliver anything reference level.
There is no way Atomos will use any custom made/special panel.

absolutly agree, wither Atmos or Apple, mastering monitor for HDR a very high bar to pass..

making plans to sell a monitor that does callibrate correctly for a mon that is nothing more than sales bumph is, well, to be polite, questionable...

i'd hang on the the Flanders and see if either of these make Dolby Cert for mastering, and if Netflix will accept either of them for mastering

the Apple will make a nice UI mon for sure...
